Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Portland Winterhawks (31-27-4-0) gained a point in the standings, but fell 4-3 in overtime in Red Deer Friday against the Rebels (37-21-1-2).
The Hawks registered the lone goal of the first when defenseman Blake Heinrich scored at 9:39 to give Portland a 1-0 lead they took into the second.
After just one goal in the first the teams combined for three in a span of under two minutes early in the second. It started with Red Deer's Haydn Fleury scoring at 5:52 to tie the game at 1-1. Just 41 seconds later Heinrich struck again when he kept the puck on a 2-on-1 and wired it past netminder Trevor Martin for a 2-1 lead.
Once again the Rebels struck back, as just under a minute later Adam Helewka scored to even the game at 2-2, which remained the score going into the third.
Red Deer took their first lead 2:09 into the third on a goal from Grayson Pawlenchuk to take a 3-2 advantage. The Hawks were able to tie it when Dominic Turgeon scored his 30th of the season at 14:57 to even the game at 3-3 and set up overtime.
In the extra frame, Ivan Nikolishin scored to give the Rebels the 4-3 win.
The two goals for Heinrich marked his first career multi-goal game, and he added an assist for three points.
The Hawks wrap up their trip through the Central Division tomorrow in Cranbrook, British Columbia when they take on the Kootenay Ice.
