Calgary, AB - The Victoria Royals scored three unanswered goals in the first 20 minutes of the game to defeat the Calgary Hitmen 6-2 on Friday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
With the win, the Royals clinched a playoff berth for the fifth consecutive year.
The Royals jumped out to an early lead as they scored on three of their nine shots in the first period. Victoria's Tyler Soy, Matthew Phillips, and Ryan Gagnon each found the back of the net in the opening frame for the visitors. Gagnon and Soy picked up their second markers of the night, while Logan Fisher also scored. Calgary's tallies were registered by Bryce Platt and Jordy Stallard.
With his goal, Phillips set the new franchise rookie goal scoring record at 33. The previous mark was held by Oscar Moller during the 2006-07 season with 32.
Royals' netminder, and Calgary, AB native, Coleman Vollrath stopped 21 of the 23 shots he faced in the win. For the Hitmen Nik Amundrud started in net and turned aside six of the nine shots, before being replaced by Cody Porter who saved 22 of the 25 shots fired his way in the game's final two periods.
Victoria's powerplay went 1/520.0%, while Calgary posted a 0/40.0% mark with the man-advantage.
The Royals will continue their three-game Alberta road-trip tomorrow night in Red Deer to take on the Rebels at 6:00 p.m. PST. Victoria will then travel to Edmonton on Monday to battle the Oil Kings with puck drop scheduled for 10:30 a.m. PST.
