Hawks Defeat Spokane 2-1
November 8, 2008 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release
Kurtis Mucha stopped 39 shots and the Portland Winter Hawks got their second consecutive road win, knocking off the Spokane Chiefs by a score of 2-1 in front of 6,513 at the Spokane Arena on Friday night.
The win snapped an 11 game losing streak for Portland in Spokane, having not won against the Chiefs on the road since 11/23/05. The consecutive road wins was the first time Portland had won back-to-back road games since February 22-25, 2006, when the Hawks won three straight road games.
The teams were scoreless through one period with the Hawks breaking through halfway through the second period when Riley Boychuk fed Tayler Jordan on a two-on-one break for Jordan's first goal of the season. Just 18 seconds later, Portland would get the game winner on a controversial play as Chris Francis' shot was deflected over the glass and into the mesh by Spokane goaltender Dustin Tokarski for what should have been a stoppage of play. Neither referee Steve Papp or Colby Smith blew their whistle, and Brock Cornish would beat Tokarski with a wrister to give the Hawks a two-goal lead.
Steven Kuhn would get a power play goal for Spokane in the third, but that would be it for the Chiefs as the Mucha would stop 39 of 40 shots for the victory. Tokarski would stop 24 of 26 in the loss for Spokane.
Portland went 0 for 3 on the power play while Spokane finished 1 for 4 on the man advantage.
Next up, the Hawks are home for the next two games - Saturday at 7:00 against the Red Deer Rebels and Sunday at 5:00 against the Kamloops Blazers. For tickets, call 503-236-HAWK or visit any Ticketmaster location.
