Vancouver Giants News Release
Prince George BC - Vancouver Giants goaltender TYSON SEXSMITH made 24 stops to earn career shutout number 22 as the Vancouver Giants, (13-0-0-3) crushed the Prince George Cougars, (8-11-0-1) 5-0 at the CN Centre in Prince George.
Sexsmith, a native of Priddis, AB, stopped 12 shots in the first, six in the second, and six more in the third to earn his second shutout of the season. His biggest tests in this game came off the stick of Cougars forward Brian Matte, who had a breakaway in the first period and a shorthanded breakaway in the second, only to be thwarted by Sexsmith on both occasions. A late third period power play by the Cougars also yielded a couple of chances, but Sexsmith turned those aside as well for the victory.
In what might have been the best road victory on the season so far, the Giants were able to score three times in the first ten minutes of the hockey game. Captain Jonathon Blum, leading scorer Evander Kane and assist leader Casey Pierro-Zabotel scored in just under four minutes midway through the first period to send the Giants on their way. James Wright with a brilliant individual effort and Mike Berube with one against his former team rounded out the scoring in the second period for Vancouver. Vancouver set a season high with 51 shots on goal, including 38 over the final two periods.
Sexsmith now moves to 9-0-0-2 on the season and sees his goals against average fall to 1.91 while his save percentage climbs to 90.3%. Joe Caligiuri falls to 2-3-0-1, and was relieved in the third period by Kevin Armstrong, who stopped all 20 third period shots faced.
The Giants wrap up their double-header Saturday in Prince George. Game time at the CN Centre will be at 7 p.m., with the pregame show at 6:30 on AM 650. Dave Sheldon and Bill Wilms will have the call for you as the Giants look to extend their league best road record.
