July 1, 2012 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Willmar Stingers News Release
WILLMAR, Minn. - Zach Benson's two-run triple in the third inning broke a 2-2 tie, and the Stingers led the rest of the way to win their third straight game, 6-4, and move into a tie with Waterloo for second place in the North Division at Bill Taunton Stadium Sunday night.
Following Benson's (Stephen F. Austin) triple, the Beetles came back with a run in the fourth inning, and the score remained 4-3 all the way until the eighth. Corben Green (Louisiana Monroe) doubled to lead off the frame, and Dillon Haupt (San Diego) homered over the left field fence to give the Stingers a 6-3 lead. It marked Haupt's second home run in two starts with the club, and he is now 4-for-9 with three RBIs since joining the team. Green's double extended his hitting streak to nine games.
Willmar (19-13) trailed initially when the Beetles (11-21) scored unearned runs in the first and third innings, but Michael Suchy (Florida Gulf Coast) got the Stingers on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third with a single that scored Mitch Rowan (San Francisco) for his league-leading 30th RBI of the season and cut the deficit to 2-1. Suchy then stole his seventh base of the season and scored one batter later on a Beetles error. Haupt singled to extend the inning, and Benson came through with two outs on a triple to center field to score two runs and give Willmar its first lead.
Jerad McCrummen (Texas Tech) improved to 3-0 with his second quality start of the season, allowing only one earned run in six innings to lower his ERA to 2.15. Josh Biggs (Evansville) pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, and Brady Anderson (Florida Gulf Coast) closed out the game after entering with the tying run on base for Alexandria with two outs in the eighth.
Four Stingers had multi-hit games, led by Benson's 3-for-4 performance with two RBIs. Haupt, Suchy and Rowan each went 2-for-4 in the contest.
Willmar will begin a stretch of nine straight games on the road with a game at Alexandria Monday at 7:05 p.m.
