Davis, Ewing Lead Chucks to 6-4 Victory

MEQUON - The Wisconsin Woodchucks used the strength of a Skyler Ewing home run and an outstanding performance on the mound by JD Davis to defeat the Lakeshore Chinooks 6-4.

The Wisconsin Woodchucks, looking to redeem themselves after last night's extra inning loss to Eau Claire, got on the board early, pushing across a run in the first inning. After a Brendon Hayden double put Brad McKewon on third base with one out, Skyler Ewing flew out to center, but the fly was deep enough to score McKewon and put the "˜Chucks on top 1-0.

The score would remain 1-0 until the top of the third when Ewing struck again for the "˜Chucks. With Brooks Braga on second and McKewon on first, Ewing blasted a three-run home run over the left-center field wall for his third home run of the season. All three of Ewing's home runs have come off of lefty pitchers, and this one gave the "˜Chucks a 4-0 lead.

The Woodchucks would add to their lead in the fourth after consecutive singles by Madison Carter and Eric Filia-Snyder put runners on the corners with no outs. Mike Bernal flied out to center, but it was deep enough to score Carter from third and give the Woodchucks a 5-0 lead.

The starter for the "˜Chucks, JD Davis, carried a strikeout through the first six innings. In the seventh, the Chinooks scored three unearned runs off of Davis, aided by two Woodchuck errors. Bre Kimbell extended his hitting streak to 20 games with a two-run double in the inning to cut the Woodchucks lead to 5-3. Davis's final line was seven innings, no earned runs, eight hits, and seven strikeouts.

The Woodchucks would get one of the runs back in the eighth when Chevas Numata scored from second on a throwing error by Matt Morse, the shortstop of the Chinooks, to make it 6-3 "˜Chucks.

The Chinooks would add a run off of closer Max Ising in the ninth, but it would not matter as the "˜Chucks were able to close out the 6-4 win. The Woodchucks and Chinooks will play the second and final game of the series tomorrow at Kapco Park with first pitch at 6:35.
