Honkers Lose Fourth Straight

(Rochester, MN) - The Rochester Honkers lost game two of a five-game set to the Thunder Bay Border Cats in Thunder Bay, Canada on Sunday, July 1st by a final tally of 7-4.

With the loss on Canada Day, Rochester has now dropped four straight games after winning the first game of the ten-game road trip in St. Cloud on Wednesday, June 27th.

The Border Cats took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning on a solo homerun from first baseman Patrick Gallagher (UCLA).

The Honkers tied it up in the top half of the fourth with an RBI single off the bat of Rochester first baseman Cole Lankford (Texas A&M) to score centerfielder Jordan Parr (Illinois) after his lead-off triple.

The two teams would go back and forth with one run in each half inning over the next couple of frames. The Honkers knotted it up in the sixth 3-3 after an RBI single from shortstop Michael Lukkason (Dakota Wesleyan).

However the big blow came in the bottom of the inning when Thunder Bay designated hitter Scott Donley (Indiana) doubled with the bases loaded off of reliever Elliot Engle (Doane) to plate three and go ahead of the Honkers 6-3. Two of the three runs scored on the hit were given to Rochester starter Kevin Johnson (Illinois).

Each team scored one more run apiece and the game ended 7-4 in favor of the home team Border Cats.

The Honkers left a staggering 13 runners on base in the game.

Kevin Johnson (Illinois) tossed 5.2 innings and gave up five earned runs on eight hits and four free passes. Johnson was handed the loss and moves to 0-1 on the season.

Leftfielder Justin Parr (Illinois) picked up three hits in the defeat and also pitched a scoreless eighth inning with two strikeouts. Dakota Smith (Kansas) and Cole Lankford each had two hits and an RBI.

Game three between the Honkers (13-19) and Border Cats (15-17) will begin tomorrow evening, July 2nd, at 6:05 PM in Thunder Bay. Starting on the hill for Rochester will be right hander Jared Miller (Vanderbilt) who is 1-0 in two starts with a 0.90 ERA. Starting for Thunder Bay will be the tall lefty Garrett Hughes (Stanford). Hughes has made just one start in 2012 and has a no-decision with a 1.80 ERA.

The Honkers will not be home again until Saturday, July 7th at 7:05 PM when they battle the Willmar Stingers.
