Stingers knock off Beetles

July 1, 2012 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Alexandria Beetles News Release

Willmar, MN - Willmar starter Steven Brault threw six and two-thirds innings of no-hit baseball, combining with a pair of relievers to strike out 14 batters, and the Stingers knocked off the Alexandria Beetles 6-2 in the opener of a five game set on Saturday.

Brault didn't allow a hit until an RBI-single by Dylan Raper in the seventh, the last batter he faced, leaving the mound to tremendous applause in his final appearance for the Stingers as his temporary contract expires.

Willmar improved to 18-13 while the Beetles dropped to11-20.

Shawn Riesgraf threw up matching zeros for the Beetles in the first three innings before the Stingers plated the first run of the game with a leadoff solo shot in the fourth by Dillon Haupt. An inning later, Michael Suchy took Riesgraf out to the left for a two-run homerun to make the score 3-0.

With Brault on the mound, that was enough for the Stingers against Alexandria and the fourth-best offense in the Northwoods League.

Alexandria cut the deficit to two in the seventh after walks to Jared Musgrove and Tanner Vavra and Raper's clean single to left, but Willmar came right back in the bottom of the seventh scoring two against reliever Andrew Busby including a straight steal of home.

After one more Willmar run crossed the plate in the eighth, Alexandria scored one of their own in the ninth with a single by Vavra to extend his hitting streak to 11 and a double by Ben Moore but the Beetles could get no closer.

The Beetles left multiple runners on in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth.

The teams return to the field Sunday at 7:05 CDT in Willmar.
