February 25, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Charlotte Checkers News Release
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The 2nd Annual Pink in the Rink proved to be an extremely successful evening as Checkers fans helped raise funds and awareness for three great non-profit groups.
The evening benefited The American Cancer Society, Carolina Breast Friends and Susan G. Komen for the Cure Charlotte Affiliate. Checkers players wore special pink jerseys in commemoration of the celebration. The jerseys were auctioned off to fans and raised $9,635. Other funds raised were by ticket sales, raffles, a donation from Katie Hagar to the American Cancer Society and merchandise donations. This brought the grand total to $20,658.
"We were so pleased to be involved with the Pink in the Rink event! It was amazing to see such a large part of our local community turn out in support of breast cancer initiatives. The Charlotte Checkers are to be commended for a top notch event," remarked Shelley Minor, income manager, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.
"The Charlotte Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure was thrilled to participate with the Charlotte Checkers at the 2008 Pink in the Rink celebration," said executive director of the Charlotte Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Gloria Scienski. "By participating in Pink in the Rink, Komen Charlotte was able to educate Checkers fans about the importance of breast health and to share our vision of a world without breast cancer."
Rene Timpone, vice president of Carolina Breast Friends thought the experience was terrific, "Carolina Breast Friends was very excited and pleased to be asked to join The Charlotte Checkers again this year for their 2nd Annual Pink in the Rink. We especially are grateful for their effort to raise awareness of CBF and our mission to create a positive environment for breast cancer survivors during any part of their journey by providing education, encouragement & friendship."
Vice president of the Charlotte Checkers, Tera Black thought the evening was a great success for everyone involved, "I am so thrilled with the turnout for this season's Pink in the Rink. It is one of my very favorite events every year because of the amazing people that are involved with each of the non-profit groups. The strength of the survivors that attend the event as well as those who support them is simply fantastic. We are already in the planning stages for next season as there are so many people that want to help."
The Checkers are in their 15th season of play as a member of the ECHL. The next home game takes place on March 4 against the Gwinnett Gladiators. In the team's 14-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 10 times including three consecutive playoff appearances to date. The Checkers are in their third season of play at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena. Season tickets are on sale now with full-season packages starting at just $175.
