Devils Back Into The Race

February 25, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Trenton Devils News Release

TRENTON, NJ - The Trenton Devils, with their backs to the wall in the postseason hunt, pulled through for three big points against the team they are chasing in the standings this past week. An overtime loss and a big win in regulation against the Johnstown Chiefs bookended the week's contests, which also included losses to Elmira and Reading. The Devils catch up to the Chiefs in games-in-hand this coming week, playing only to contests to Johnstown's four. The Devils are 19-29-3-4, and sit in sixth place in the North Division with 45 points.

JOHNSTOWN SQUEAKS BY: The Devils took on the Johnstown Chiefs in a rare Monday matinee, fighting a see-saw battle which would ultimately go to overtime. Trenton scored two goals in a span of 23 seconds to equalize a 2-0 contest in the second period, when Eric Castonguay and Matt Radoslovich each lit the lamp. After a late Chiefs goal in the third, Thomas Harrison became the hero, firing a slapper from the right wing point past Ryan Nie to send the game to the extra frame. Johnstown slipped away with the win in OT, when Rob Drummond netted a 4-on-3 power play goal with two minutes left for a 4-3 win.

JACKALS JUMP PAST: Trenton took an early lead going into the first intermission, but five straight Elmira goals drove the Jackals to a 6-2 victory. Matt Radoslovich and Joe Rooney found the back of the net just over a minute apart in the first period, but Trenton could not convert on any of ten power plays. Having to kill off nine out of ten penalties themselves, the Devils were back on its heels during the remaining two periods and saw Elmira pull away.

READING ROARS: The Devils headed out on the road for the weekend with a Friday set against Reading only to be stopped cold, 7-2, by a red-hot Royals squad. Trevor Kell gave Trenton the early lead with a snapshot in the first period, but aside from a Matt Radoslovich marker in the second period, the game was dominated by Reading. Patrick Jarrett and Dany Roussin scored three points (1g, 2a each) in the game.

CHIEFS CHOPPED: Trenton, knowing that it needed two points against the Chiefs to tighten the playoff race, put together one of its best games of the season on Sunday. Taking advantage of a depleted and exhausted Johnstown squad, the Devils scored four unanswered goals in the second period to take the eventual 4-3 win. Jim Henkel snapped the Devils power play drought at 43 with Trenton's first tally, and goals by Trevor Kell, Joe Rooney, and Jason Paige followed. The Devils scored two goals in under a minute twice in the contest.

QUICK HITS: Ryan Gunderson leads all rookie defensemen in scoring with 36 points (4g, 32a)... Stephen Wood is tied for the lead in defensemen goals scored at 12... Matt Radoslovich leads all Devils with five points (3g, 2a) over the last five games... Trenton is 10-2-0-0 when leading after the second... The Devils are 8-0-1-2 when scoring four-or-more goals... Trenton has scored goals within a minute-and-a-half of each other in four of the last five contests.
