The week that was:

Friday, February 22, Florida Everblades 4 @ Augusta Lynx 2

Behind a 4-2 win on Friday, the Florida Everblades took the season series from the Augusta Lynx four games to three. The Lynx were doomed by one of their worst starts of the year as the Everblades scored three goals in the first five minutes to give them a lead they would never lose. Steve Czech scored just 1:31 into the game with a shot that floated in behind a screened #30 Bobby Goepfert from the point for a 1-0 Florida lead. Brandon Roach made it 2-0 with a power play goal as he snapped a shot past Goepfert's glove. Then, just five minutes into the game Kirk MacDonald made it 3-0 as he collected a rebound that got loose in behind Goepfert and trickled onto MacDonald's stick for the three goal advantage. That goal would be the end of Bobby Goepfert's night, as he was replaced by #1 Gerald Coleman. The moved paid off in the first Augusta goal of the night, scored by #25 Adrian Veideman, who had just be sent back to Augusta by Portland earlier in the day. The lead increased back to three for the Everblades in the 2nd period as Jaret Lukin's shot found it's way through a screened Coleman for a 4-1 lead for the Everblades. The Lynx got the score to within 4-2 with a 5 on 3 power play goal from #21 Bobby Bolt, who smashed home a rebound drive from #15 Eric Lundberg. However, that would be the closest the Lynx would get. A stifling Florida defense held the Lynx attack to just four shots in the 3rd period and when the Lynx did manage a few chances, Florida goalie David Shantz was there to shut the door. The loss was the 3rd in a row for the Lynx, who have also dropped three out of their last four home games.

Saturday, February 23, South Carolina Stingrays 1 @ Augusta Lynx 4

Led by 26 saves from goaltender #1 Gerald Coleman, the Augusta Lynx snapped a three-game losing skid by defeating the South Carolina Stingrays on Saturday night, 4-1 in front of 3,283 fans at the James Brown Arena. The Stingrays would get the scoring going however, as leading scorer Travis Morin capitalized on the first 'Rays power play of the night with a goal that just snuck underneath Coleman's left pad for a 1-0 lead. It marked the fifth straight game that the Lynx have failed to score first. The Lynx responded with determination just two minutes later as #21 Bobby Bolt smashed home a loose puck past Josh Johnson for his 13th goal of the year with great help from linemates #17 Jeremy Schenderling and #16 Chase Watson, who kept the play alive deep in the 'Rays zone. The Lynx made it 2-1 on a power play goal from captain #9 Louis Goulet, who put home a rebound after a shot from #18 Dan Kronick and help from #20 Matt Auffrey. It was Goulet's 89th career goal as a Lynx leaving only one behind Jonas Soling's 90 goals, the all-time Lynx record. The 2nd period was the Gerald Coleman show, as the goaltender made several back-door saves, and was the star on a 5 on 3 'Rays power play toward the end of the period. Although the Lynx only managed six shots on goal in the 3rd period, they scored twice to put the game out of reach. Schenderling made it 3-1 with his 6th goal of the season on the power play after a beautiful flip pass from #21 Bobby Bolt and more help from #2 Jason Platt. Chase Watson finished the scoring with an empty-net goal as the Lynx evened the season series with the Stingrays at three games a piece.

Sunday, February 24, Augusta Lynx 1 @ Gwinnett Gladiators 3

Another slow start plagued the Augusta Lynx on Sunday, this time it was against 2nd place Gwinnett as the Gladiators used three 1st period goals to ulitimately defeat the Lynx, 3-1. The other difference in the loss were the special teams. The Gladiators scored on their first two power plays of the game, both by leading goal-scorer Lou Dickenson to take a quick 2-0 lead from the opening face-off. The Lynx power plays were almost powerless, generating only three shots on goal during their first four power plays of the game. An even strength goal from Matt Anderson made it 3-0 towards the tail-end of the 1st period. Lynx goaltender #30 Bobby Goepfert could not be faulted for any of the goals, often times making multiple saves before the Gladiators buried loose rebounds. The 2nd Glads goal ended up going off a Lynx defenseman into the net. The Lynx responded with some much better play in the 2nd and 3rd periods. The lone Lynx goal of the night came in the 2nd period off the stick of #20 Matt Auffrey, who buried a loose rebound after a drive from #11 Matt Christie and a pass from #5 Ken Scuderi. However, the rest of the way the Lynx couldn't muster much offense. #25 Adrian Veideman hit the post late in the 2nd period, but the 3rd period saw the Lynx shut down offensively, only getting six shots on goal. The loss is the fourth in the last five games for the Lynx, who have failed to score first in their last six contests.
