Hall-Of-Famer Bocanegra Member of Rare Century Trifecta: MLS Week 11 News & Notes

Long-time U.S. national team defender and MLS veteran Carlos Bocanegra - also current Atlanta United Vice President and Technical Director - was elected to the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame this week.
Bocanegra is just one of three players in U.S. soccer history to have appeared in 100 matches in both Major League Soccer and England's Premier League, as well as having won 100 caps for the U.S. national team, according to Stats Perform.
Bocanegra played six seasons in Major League Soccer, stints with the Chicago Fire (2000-03) and Chivas USA (2013-14) wrapped around a decade in Europe, where he spent four seasons with Fulham FC in England (2004-08). Bocanegra is tied for 11th all-time in U.S. men's national team history with 110 caps.
Bocanegra, along with Clint Dempsey and Tim Howard, are the only players to reach 100 appearances in both leagues as well as the U.S. national team.

INTER MIAMI'S MATUIDI JOINS PANTHEON OF MLS WORLD CUP WINNERS
Blaise Matuidi became the 12th winner of the FIFA World Cup to appear in a match in Major League Soccer history, with his debut for Inter Miami CF in their match against Nashville SC at Inter Miami CF Stadium on Sunday evening.
With the appearance of Matuidi - who won the World Cup with France in 2018 - a member of each of the last eight FIFA World Cup champions has now played in the league.

COLUMBUS CREW SC CONTINUE MARCH ON ONE OF GREATEST DEFENSIVE SEASONS
Columbus Crew SC are continuing on their path to make their 2020 campaign one of the greatest seasons defensively in Major League Soccer history.
Through their first 10 games, following their 3-0 win against FC Cincinnati at Mapfre Stadium on Sept. 6, Crew SC have allowed just two goals. That equals the fewest through a team's opening 10 games of the season in MLS history, along with the LA Galaxy in 2010.

GOALKEEPERS MAKING MOVES UP MLS SHUTOUT LEADERBOARD
Staying with the defensive theme, a pair of goalkeepers continued their march up the all-time league shutout standings through their performances last weekend.
Inter Miami CF goalkeeper Luis Robles recorded a shutout for a second consecutive match - the first two in the club's MLS history - in the goalless draw with Nashville SC on Sept. 6. It was the 74th shutout of Robles's MLS career, eighth-most all-time - and he is now just one shutout behind Matt Reis at No. 7, and just two adrift of Zach Thornton at No. 6.
That same evening, New York City FC goalkeeper Sean Johnson posted the shutout in his club's goalless draw at D.C. United. The shutout was the 64th of his MLS career - moving him into a tie for 10th-most in league annals.

LAFC weren't able to build upon a first win in the continuation of play in the 2020 season, falling 3-0 to the LA Galaxy at Dignity Health Sports Park.
LAFC have won all four league meetings between the teams. Sounders FC have a 10-game undefeated streak alive in the overall series. A 2-2 draw in the first meeting last year on April 24 ended a three-game Sounders FC winning streak at CenturyLink Field. Sounders FC have come away with points on each of their five visits to San Jose (three draws and two victories), including a 1-0 win in their last visit last Sept. 29.
SOUNDERS FC:Â Sounders FC lost at home for the first time in more than a year, since Aug. 4, 2019, a span of 10 games without defeat.

Sean JohnsonÂ recorded the shutout, his second in a row and fourth of the season, as D.C. United were held without a single attempt at goal, just the second time that has happened in MLS history (in 5,996 games all-time).
FC Cincinnati saw their streak of back-to-back draws come to an end, falling 3-0 to Columbus Crew SC at Mapfre Stadium on Sunday evening. FC Cincinnati extended the longest scoreless streak recorded in MLS this season, now 484 consecutive minutes since their last goal, 10th-longest such streak in MLS history.
The teams met twice in FC Cincinnati's inaugural season, and New York City FC won both by heavy margins.Â HéberÂ scored two goals and added an assist andÂ Maximiliano MoralezÂ had a goal and three assists as NYCFC took a 5-2 win on June 6 at Yankee Stadium;Â HéberÂ andÂ Valentin CastellanosÂ each netted a pair of goals as NYCFC claimed a 4-1 win Aug. 17 at Nippert Stadium.
NYCFC:Â Sean JohnsonÂ now has 64 shutouts for his MLS career, moving into a tie for 10th-most all-time. His personal shutout streak is currently at 225 minutes. ... NYCFC has allowed one goal or fewer in nine of 10 games played this season.
FCC:Â FC Cincinnati extended their shutout streak to 255 minutes before conceding a goal, their first allowed since Aug. 25. It is FCC's second streak of at least 250 minutes without conceding a goal, after going 302 consecutive minutes without conceding a goal from July 16-Aug. 21

D.C. United gained points for a second consecutive match with a second consecutive shutout, reaching a goalless draw with New York City FC at Audi Field on Sunday evening. United were able to reach the draw despite not having a single attempt at goal, the second time in MLS history that has happened.
The Red Bulls weren't able to come away with a result in the head coaching debut for Bradley Carnell, falling 3-0 to the Philadelphia Union at Red Bull Arena on Sunday evening.
The teams are meeting for the second time this season.Â Erik SorgaÂ scored his first MLS goal eight minutes into second-half stoppage time to give United the 1-0 win on Sept. 2 at Red Bull Arena - the latest in MLS history the game's only goal was scored.
The United victory ended a 10-game Red Bulls undefeated streak in the series, with United's last previous win coming on May 13, 2016, at RFK Stadium. The United victory also ended a 10-game Red Bulls undefeated streak in regular season matches at Red Bull Arena, their first win in Harrison since 2011. The Red Bulls have won two of the three meetings all-time at Audi Field, including a 2-1 win last Aug. 21 in the last meeting there.
The teams have met 96 times in all competitions over the years - the most of any two clubs in MLS history. New York has won 35 and United have won 44, including a 7-4-2 record in the postseason. They play for the Atlantic Cup, awarded to the winner of the season series by supporters' groups from both clubs.
UNITED:Â Chris SeitzÂ was credited with four saves in recording a shutout for a second consecutive game, in his third start of the season. They are his first shutouts in MLS league games since March 3, 2018, when he was with the Houston Dynamo. He currently has a shutout streak of 209 minutes.

The Union have won seven of the past 10 league meetings between the clubs, outscoring New England 22-3 in those victories, including wins in the last five meetings in Chester. The Galaxy won 4-2 on May 27, 2017 at Earthquakes Stadium in the last match there - just their second victory in the last 18 regular season games in northern California, across four stadiums. The win in Carson last year was just the second there for the Quakes since 2012.
Known as the California ClÃ¡sico, the Galaxy and Earthquakes have met 87 times in all competitions. In regular season play, the Galaxy have won 32 times and the Quakes 24, with 15 draws, since their first meeting April 28, 1996.
