San Diego Gulls News Release


SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Gulls have started off the New Year with tons of community appearances. Community involvement remains priority for the players, coaches and front office staff, as they gear up for the playoff drive.

Here's an updated list of some of the events the players and staff have attended:

Jan. 17: Doug MacIver, Darren Clark, the Gulls Girls and Baby Gull participated in the first-ever "Cooking with the Gulls" night at O'Farrell Middle School in Encanto. The Gulls teamed up with Embrace to show children and their parents how to prepare culturally appropriate meals in a healthy manner. The players helped prepare the meal, signed autographs and posed for pictures, and then sat down to enjoy the food with everyone.

Jan. 18: Gulls players Aaron McKenzie and Evan Shaw appeared at Woody's Sports Bar and Grille in Escondido. They signed autographs, posed for pictures and participated in a trivia game.

Jan. 30: Aaron McKenzie and Guillaume Fournier attended a assembly at Bonsall West Elementary. The players spoke to a group of approximately 200 children and dressed the principal in hockey gear.

Feb. 1: Public Relations Director Jeremy Zager attended the Celebrity Reader day at St. John of the Cross Catholic School in Lemon Grove. Zager read to Mr. Hines' fifth grade class.

Here's a list of events that the Gulls will be participating in during the next few weeks. (There will be additions so make sure you check out the Gulls' web site (www.sandiegogulls.com) for updates.

Feb. 10: Gulls players, the Gulls Girls and Baby Gull will be appearing at NBC 7/39's "Torino Winter Olympics Opening Ceremonies Celebration." This will take place in Little Italy - outside (downtown area) The Gulls will have a booth on India Street between Date and Cedar.

Feb. 12: Alex Rogosheske and Kelly Askew will be appearing at the San Diego Jewish Academy's to help celebrate the opening of the new athletic fields. The Gulls players will be at the new roller hockey rink where they will talk to children about hockey and give a skills demonstration.

Feb. 20: The third annual "Dunk-A-Gull" night will be held at Dick's Last Resort in downtown San Diego from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The event will give fans a chance to soak their favorite Gulls players in a dunk tank with proceeds benefiting United Cerebral Palsy of San Diego County.

Feb. 21: Players will be at an assembly at St. John's of the Cross Catholic School in Lemon Grove and at an Literacy First Charter School in El Cajon.

Feb. 22: Channel 10 will film their "10 Leadership Award" on the ice at the ipayOne center.

Mar. 1: The Mascot will appear at Oak Park Elementary School from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Mar. 2: A Gulls representative will be at Ross Elementary School. Mar. 5: The Gulls are holding their 15th annual "Tip-A-Gull" event from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Dick's Last Resort, located in the Gaslamp district of downtown San Diego. Gulls players will hang up their skates and strap on their aprons, serving as waiters and bartenders. They'll also assist with a live auction that will include various sports memorabilia such as autographed jerseys, sticks, baseballs, hats as well as tickets to sporting events throughout Southern California. Gulls tickets will also be auctioned off as well as a "Date with a Gull." Players will also be available for photos and autographs. Proceeds from the event will be donated to United Cerebral Palsy.

Mar. 21: Gulls will hold their fourth annual "Bowling Night" at Kearny Mesa Bowl from 9:30p.m to midnight. Gulls fans will have the opportunity to bowl with their favorite players and win exciting prizes in a silent auction. Proceeds from the event will benefit youth hockey in San Diego.
