Gulls End Ice Dogs Win Streak, Win 3-2 In Overtime

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Long Beach Ice Dogs (18-15-5) were unable to extend their season long win streak to five games Saturday night, falling to the San Diego Gulls (18-15-4) in sudden death overtime, 3-2. The loss left the Ice Dogs just one point ahead of the Gulls for second place in the Pacific Division.

The Ice Dogs got the scoring started at 8:43 of the first period, when David Walker scored on the power play from Kevin Ulanski and Sean McAslan. Then at 12:37, the Gulls tied it up with a goal by Pierre-Luc Sleigher from Martin Mandeville and Richard Keyes. Less than a minute later, Michael Woodford gave the Ice Dogs a 2-1 lead with assists to Walker and Cory Urquhart.

The only goal of the second period came 33 seconds in when Jesse Bennefield scored from Darren Clark and Jonathon Shockey. The game would remain tied 2-2 through the remainder of the game to send it into overtime.

In the sudden death overtime period, The Gulls were the ones who prevailed, scoring with 38 seconds left. Sleigher got the game winner, his second goal of the game, while Jason Reimers and Jesse Bennefield were credited with the assists.

Greg Hewitt took the overtime loss, making 15 saves. Tom Lawson was busy in net for San Diego, making 39 saves in the win. The Ice Dogs went 1-6 on the power play while stopping all five of the Gulls' power play opportunities.
