San Diego Gulls News Release

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The San Diego Gulls look to get their second win of the season when they take on the struggling Bakersfield Condors Friday night at Centennial Garden.

The Gulls opened their season with a 1-0 whitewashing of the Condors Saturday. Mike Garrow scored the lone goal early in the third period, jumping on a rebound in front of the net. Trevor Koenig turned aside all 27 shots, earning his 15th shutout and 100th win in a San Diego uniform.

Koenig was placed on the seven-day injured reserve list (retroactive to Monday) with a sore groin, which means rookie netminder David Burleigh will get the start on Friday.

Burleigh will make his professional debut after four successful years at Miami University (Ohio). During his collegiate career at Miami of Ohio, he set six career goaltending records: games played, minutes, goals-against average, saves, wins and shutouts. Burleigh was also named Miami's Outstanding Defensive Player three straight seasons.

Dennis Purdie, who captained the Gulls to the West Coast Hockey League Championship last season, will also make his season debut. He sat out last week with a sinus infection.

The Condors are still looking for their first point of the season. They were shutout in their season opener 3-0 against Fresno, before the Gulls blanked them 1-0 the following night. Bakersfield suffered its third straight loss with a 4-2 setback in Las Vegas on Tuesday.

The Wranglers jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Quinn Fair scored Bakersfield's first goal of the season 2:26 into the third. That broke a scoreless streak of 162:26.

San Diego was 7-6-1 against Bakersfield last season and is 77-15-5 all-time against its new ECHL rival. The two will square off eight more times in the regular season.

The Gulls conclude their road trip Tuesday in Las Vegas before opening the home schedule Saturday, Nov. 1 against the Idaho Steelheads. The first 10,000 fans will get their very own pair of Gulls Thunder Sticks, courtesy of 4-Lawyer.com. And in honor of Halloween, it's going to be a blackout...so all fans are encouraged to dress in ALL BLACK to show their Halloween spirit! Kids 14 and under can wear their costumes and "Trick-or-Treat" on the outer concourse during the game! And, your favorites from KGB 101.5 FM will be there to keep everyone entertained all game long. All games can be heard on KPOP 1360AM with Chris Ello calling the play-by-play.
