San Diego Gulls News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The San Diego Gulls being a four-game road trip when they take on the Alaska Aces tonight at Sullivan Arena.

San Diego is coming off a weekend split against the Florida Everblades, their first "former East Coast Hockey League" opponent. The Gulls won Friday 6-5 in a shootout before falling Saturday 3-1.

The Gulls begin the day with seven points, tied for last in the Pacific Division. They, however, have still played the fewest games in the ECHL. The majority of the other teams have played at least 10.

Billy Tibbetts, the club leader in goals, assists, points and penalty minutes, will be out three to five weeks with a fractured wrist. Tibbetts suffered the injury in the third period of Saturday's game after being slashed by Florida's Stuart Pietersma.

That puts the bulk of the offensive load back on Mark Pederson, who is tied for second on the team with five points. Pederson led the Gulls in goals and points last season, on his way to being named the West Coast Hockey League's Outstanding Forward.

The Aces, who finished 25 games under .500 last year, are off to their best start in five years. They begin the day with 10 points, tied for third in the Pacific Division.

Alaska won four of its first five games to start the season, but have fallen off a bit losing three of its last four. The Aces are returning home after a three-game road trip. They were 1-2 on the trek, winning in Long Beach and losing in Las Vegas and Bakersfield.

Newcomers Mark Smith and Mike Scott lead the club with 12 and 11 points respectively. Alaska also has strong special teams, with the seventh best power play and fourth best penalty killing.

This is the first of 10 meetings this year between the former WCHL rivals. Alaska is 4-2-0 at home while the Gulls are 1-1-1 on the road. San Diego leads the all-time series with a 57-14-4 mark.
