February 22, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL)
Greenville Grrrowl News Release
GREENVILLE, SC - Greenville Grrrowl General Manager Ryan Stewart announced today that the Grrrowl have acquired the ECHL rights to Toledo Storm forward BRAD BONELLO in exchange for MATT ZULTEK. Bonello is under contract with the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League, where he has played eight games this season.
Bonello has 30 points in 32 games with Toledo in his rookie season. The Brampton, Ontario native began the year with the Storm and after a four-point game against Wheeling on Dec. 2nd, was called up to Grand Rapids for over a month. In eight games with the AHL club, Bonello had one assist, six shots, and an even +/- rating.
The 21-year-old leaves Toledo ranking sixth on the team in points. Twice this season he's strung together a seven-game point scoring streak, most recently notching seven points in seven games from Feb. 8-18.
Listed at 5-9 and 162 pounds, Bonello began his OHL career with the Erie Otters in 2001-02. He was traded to Peterborough in 2003-04 and played his final year of juniors with the Ottawa 67's. Bonello tallied 66 points in 57 regular season games with Ottawa last year. As Ottawa put together its playoff run which ended with a loss in the OHL Championship Series, Bonello collected 17 points in 21 playoff games. He finished with 191 points in his 242-game junior career.
Matt Zultek played 22 games with the Grrrowl this season, collecting 11 points and 56 penalty minutes. The veteran heads to Toledo, Ohio, which is just an hour away from his birthplace of Windsor, Ontario.
This is Greenville's second trade this week, as the Grrrowl acquired Steve Slonina from the Stockton Thunder in exchange for Mike Knight on Monday.
In a separate transaction, Grrrowl forward BRAD WANCHULAK was placed on waivers today. Wanchulak had three points in eight games with the Grrrowl, helping the team to a 6-1-1 record during his stretch.
The Grrrowl are back in action Friday night with a 7:05 p.m. game against the Charlotte Checkers at the BI-LO Center. After that game, Greenville will hit the road for a six-game road trip. For tickets, call 864-233-2525.
