Grizzlies Win Second Straight

October 23, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Utah Grizzlies News Release

West Valley City, Utah - The Grizzlies won their second straight game with a 3-1 victory over the defending Calder Cup champion Chicago Wolves. The win improves the Grizzlies to 2-3-0-0 and drops the Wolves to 1-2-1-0 on the season.

Utah started the scoring in the first period when David Gosselin banged a Jon Sim missed shot past Chicago goaltender Norm Maracle for his first goal of the season. Jim Montgomery and Sim drew assists on Gosselin's power play goal. In the second period, the Grizzlies added to their lead when Jeff Bateman pushed a loose puck at the side of the net past Maracle for his first goal of the season, also on the power play.

During the third period, Utah claimed a three-goal lead with a goal by Gavin Morgan, the Grizzlies' first even strength goal of the night. Barrett Heisten and Justin Cox each played solid two-way hockey and both got on the score sheet with assists on Morgan's goal.

The Wolves would take advantage of a triple minor penalty against Utah defenseman Dan Jancevski and watch Andreas Karlsson score an unassisted power play goal midway through the frame pulling Chicago to within two goals but that is where they would stay as Corey Hirsch played strong throughout stopping 34 shots en route to his first win of the season.

The Grizzlies mustered only 10 shots on net during the final two periods and were outshot 35-20 during the game. Utah has been outshot in each of the first five games of the season.

Three Stars: 1. Corey Hirsch (Grizzlies) 34 saves 2. Gavin Morgan (Grizzlies) one goal 3. David Gosselin (Grizzlies) one goal

Next Game: The Grizzlies will meet Chicago again on Friday night with face-off scheduled for 7:00 pm.
