Gulls Game Preview
October 23, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release
BOISE, Idaho -- After suffering their first loss of the season, the San Diego Gulls look to rebound tonight in the second game of a two-game set with the Idaho Steelheads at the Bank of America Centre.
San Diego got away with taking too many penalties in its first three games, but Joe Rybar's power-play tally late in the second period was the difference in Idaho's 2-0 victory yesterday. The Gulls did have their chances with the extra man, which included a five-minute major power play, but went 0 for 9. Dan Shermerhorn put the nail in the coffin with an empty net goal late in the third period.
The Blue and Orange have been short-handed 39 times in its four games this season... San Diego has allowed only seven goals thus far, but six have come on the power play... R.J. Enga still leads the West Coast Hockey League with seven points and four goals... Clayton Read leads the league with five assists... Last night was only the eighth time in franchise history that the Gulls have been shutout... Idaho goaltender Blair Allison has three of those shutouts...
With the win, the Steelheads jumped into first place, one point ahead of San Diego and the Fresno Falcons... Allison is now tied with Trevor Koenig and Sergei Naumov with 10 career WCHL shutouts, the all-time high. He comes into tonight's game with a 1.00 goals against average, best in the league... Idaho has killed off 41 of 42 penalties...
San Diego concludes its four-game road trip Saturday in Long Beach at 7 p.m. The Gulls return home Sunday against the Bakersfield Condors at 5 p.m. All games can be heard live on 1130AM-KSDO and at www.ksdo.com with Chris Ello calling the play-by-play. The Gulls' Internet radio show broadcasts this week on wsradio.com with Tera Black and Jeremy Zager hosting.
