Fresno Grizzlies News Release
Fresno, CA - Wins never come easy, but after a 13-inning marathon game against the New Orleans Zephyrs last night, the Fresno Grizzlies had a relatively breeze of a game by comparison Monday night.
The Grizzlies (60-57) jumped all over the Zephyrs (62-54) in the first four innings as they got out to a 6-0 lead, pulling out the eventual victory 6-4.
Fresno has now reached the 60-win mark, 117 games into the season for the Grizzlies. Just a year ago, the Grizzlies had just 47 wins on the season after 117 games, and trailed by 28 games for the division lead.
For six innings, the Fresno Grizzlies were on cruise control, especially after Luis Figueroa's second two-RBI hit of the game, a double scoring Clay Timpner and Justin Leone, making it 5-0.
Fresno starter Chris Begg did much of the grunt work on the defensive end for the Grizzlies, pitching in to the seventh inning while reaching the 50-strikeout benchmark for the season. Begg (9-3) picked up the win for the Grizzlies, his ninth of the season.
Figueroa and Leone teamed to score five of the Grizzlies' six runs in the game while combining for four of the team's six hits on the night. Figueroa hit his second home run of the season in the second inning off of New York Mets prospect Philip Humber (10-7), who took the loss. Figueroa also picked up four RBIs, giving him 36 on the year.
The Zephyrs would threaten the Grizzlies for a brief time, sending 10 batters to the plate in the seventh inning while scoring four runs to bring the game to within two runs. Third baseman Fernando Tatis had the big blow for New Orleans with a one-out double to score two runs.
Grizzlies closer Brian Wilson finished the job for Fresno in the ninth inning, earning his 10th save of the season.
With only 10 home games remaining this season, the Grizzlies continue their series with New Orleans tomorrow night on a Tecate Taco Tuesday. $2 tacos will be served all game and $2 16 oz. Tecate beers will be available until the 7:35.
Tickets are available at the Chukchansi Park ticket office, over the phone at 559-320-TIXS, or online at www.fresnogrizzlies.com.
