Round Rock Express News Release

ROUND ROCK - It's been an arduous journey, but Brandon Backe can almost see the finish line.

Nearly one year after undergoing Tommy John ligament replacement surgery, the right-hander is a handful of Triple-A rehabilitation starts away from rejoining the Houston Astros. He'll make his first appearance for the Round Rock Express tonight as the team faces the Salt Lake Bees.

Backe, who was scheduled by Houston to make six minor league starts, allowed three runs on five hits, four strikeouts and two walks in an Aug. 2 start for the Double-A Corpus Christi Hooks. His progress with Round Rock will determine his cycle in the team's five-man rotation.

Backe, a native of Galveston, went 10-8 with Houston in 2005 and posted a 3-2 record in eight starts before being sidelined last season. He is 19-14 with a 4.71 earned-run average over five major league seasons.

If all goes as planned, Backe's first Major League appearance would fall on Sept. 1 in Chicago.
