PORTLAND, Ore. - Rick Ankiel hit his league-leading 32nd home run and the Memphis Redbirds fought off a late Portland Beavers rally for a 4-3 victory before 6,441 Tuesday night at PGE Park.

Ankiel, who missed the first two games of the series, broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth with a first-pitch, three-run blast off Will Startup, who just entered the game in place of starter Steve Watkins (2-5), who took the loss with three runs allowed over 4 1/3 innings.

The Beavers (48-70) fought back in the bottom of the eighth, trimming their deficit to 4-3 after Royce Huffman's two-out, two-run single through the left side of the infield.

Hugo Castellanos (3-0) worked two innings of relief to get the win for the Redbirds (48-70), who snapped a five-game losing streak. Chris Perez closed things out in the ninth to notch his second save.

Former Beaver Tagg Bozied's two-out single scored Brendan Ryan from second as the Redbirds took a quick first-inning lead.

The Beavers tied it in the fourth, getting a single from Peter Ciofrone and an RBI double from Brian Myrow, who entered the game leading the Pacific Coast League with a .351 batting average.

The Beavers conclude their series with Memphis Wednesday at 12:05 p.m.

NOTES: Before the game, the Padres recalled outfielder Terrmel Sledge and optioned right-handed pitcher Mike Thompson to Portland. Additionally, infielder Shea Hillenbrand was released by Portland, outfielder Mike Epping was transferred to Portland from Class A Lake Elsinore and right-handed pitcher Clay Hensley was added to the Beavers active roster after being optioned on Sunday ...
