Gateway Grizzlies News Release
SAUGET, Ill. - The Gateway Grizzlies recorded a season-high in hits and runs en route to a 10-4 win Thursday night at GCS Ballpark, completing a sweep of the Joliet Slammers.
Four Grizzlies had at least two hits to lead Gateway (5-1) to their third straight win and a tie for first place in the West Division with Windy City. Gateway's one-through-four batters combined for nine hits and six runs batted in with eight runs.
Gateway pounded Joliet starting pitcher Danny Hernandez (0-1), scoring five runs in the first two innings of the game.
Niko Vasquez drove in his third run of the season on a sacrifice fly and Blake Shepherd recorded a two-run double to give the Grizzlies a 3-0 first inning lead.
After Jonathan Johnson was hit by a pitch with one out in the second inning, shortstop Tommy Richards blasted his first professional home run to extend the Gateway advantage to 5-0.
Richards finished 3-for-5 with two runs batted in and three runs scored, raising his average to .389.
Gateway starting pitcher Dejai Oliver (2-0) struggled with his command in the third inning, helping Joliet score two runs. Oliver walked the first three batters of the inning before Joliet scored two runs on an Adam Giacalone RBI single and a double play groundout.
Oliver (2-0) allowed three runs on five hits in six innings while notching his second win in his second start.
Joliet pulled within two runs in the sixth inning after a Grant DeBruin solo home run.
Gateway responded with five runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth to take a 10-3 lead.
Vasquez drove in three runs on a double and Ben Waldrip brought in two runs on a single.
The Grizzlies head on the road Friday night for game one of a three-game series with the River City Rascals. Right-hander Aaron Newcomb (1-0) will make the start for the Grizzlies. First pitch is set for 7:05.
