Joliet Slammers News Release
The Joliet Slammers-Presented by ATI Physical Therapy-lost on the road to Gateway 10-4 on Thursday night.
The Grizzlies struck right away off of Daniel Hernandez with three runs in the 1st inning. The big hit was a 2-run double from Blake Shepard and Niko Vasquez added a sacrifice fly. Joliet had a lead off single from Darian Sandford in the 1st and a leadoff double from Grant DeBruin in the 2nd inning but both failed to score. Gateway added a 2-run homer from Tommy Richards to make it a 5-0 lead after two innings.
The Slammers got on the board in the 3rd inning after DeJai Oliver walked the bases loaded. Adam Giacalone singled in one run and then a Grant DeBruin double play scored another to push the score to 5-2. DeBruin then hit the Slammers' first home run of the season to lead off the top of the 6th inning to make it 5-3. Hernandez did a nice job for Joliet in the meantime shutting down Gateway for three innings to allow that comeback. He was lifted after five innings in favor of Ryan Connolly who struggled to start the 6th and was lifted after allowing a 3-run double by Niko Vasquez. The Grizzlies 5-run inning was capped by a Ben Waldrip 2-run single off of Sam Moore. The Slammers tallied one more time on a RBI single from Marquis Riley in the 9th but it was not enough as Joliet has now lost three in a row after winning the first three games of the season.
