Washington Wild Things Earn First Sweep of 2014 Season
May 22, 2014 - Frontier League (FL)
Washington Wild Things News Release
WASHINGTON, PA- The offense continued to light up the scoreboard in left field at CONSOL Energy Park, as the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, belted out 11 hits en route to a 5-2 victory, sweeping the visiting Frontier Greys in the three-game series.
Starting pitcher Tim Flight earned his first victory of the season for the Wild Things, striking out six and allowing only one run. Justin Jackson took the loss for the Greys.
The Wild Things wasted no time in gaining Flight a lead. After quickly acquiring two outs, right fielder Stewart Ijames lit up the scoreboard with a double that scored shortstop Ryan Kresky. Ijames, who led Washington at the plate going 3-4 with two doubles and one RBI, plated later in the inning off of a double steal. First baseman William Beckwith added to the Wild Things lead with a double off of the left field wall, followed by an RBI single by left fielder Scott Kalamar to make it 4-0 Washington.
On the defensive side, Flight soared through the Greys offense, working efficiently and struck out the side in the top of the second. Flight did not allow a base runner until the top of the fourth when left fielder Cameron Monger drove a line drive into the center field grass. Monger paced the Greys at the plate, going 3-4 with a triple and scoring one of two runs.
After the no-hitter was broken up in the top half of the fourth inning, center fielder Daniel Poma doubled to regain some command, making it a 5-0 ballgame.
Despite a sacrifice RBI's by third baseman Logan Pierce in the sixth and eighth, the Greys were unable to climb back from the early deficit, giving Washington the series sweep.
The Wild Things look to defend their undefeated record at home Friday, May 23rd as the Rockford Aviators fly in for a three-game series. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05, followed by a postgame fireworks showcase presented by Washington Financial.
