Lake Erie Crushers Offense Erupts
May 22, 2014 - Frontier League (FL)
Lake Erie Crushers News Release
CRESTWOOD, Ill. -- The Lake Erie Crushers went to work offensively on Thursday afternoon against the Windy City Thunderbolts, as they scored 12 times on 14 hits, and came away with a convincing, 12-4 victory to avoid a sweep.
The win for the Crushers (4-2) snapped a five-game slide against the Thunderbolts (5-1), who were one of just two remaining unbeaten teams in the Frontier League prior to Thursday's loss.
Lake Erie scored multiple runs in four different innings, and scored their most runs in a game since plating 11 runs in the opener last Friday against Schaumburg.
Windy City scored two times in the bottom of the first inning before the Crushers caught fire. The T-bolts scored their runs on a pair of RBI singles from Ryan Soares and Max White.
The Crushers scored a trio of runs in the top of the third inning to take their first and only lead of the series, and never looked back. Juan Sanchez began the inning with his first of four hits on the day, a double down the line in left field, and he scored moments later as Trevor Stevens reached on Soares's throwing error at short.
Stevens advanced to second on the aforementioned errant throw, and Kevin Berard drove him home during the next at bat on a base hit. Berard stole second, advanced to third on Anderson Hidalgo's groundout, then scored the go-ahead run on Ryan Hutchison's sacrifice fly.
Lake Erie was far from done, as they added three more in the fifth inning, and sent all nine batters to the plate. Emmanuel Quiles and Brian Haggett, batters 5 and 6 in the Lake Erie batting order, drove in half of Lake Erie's 12 runs on the day, and it started in the fifth inning, with Quiles singling in his first two runs, and Haggett followed with an opposite field RBI single to left, giving the Crushers a 6-2 lead.
The Crushers sent all nine to the plate for a second inning in a row in the top of the sixth, as they plated four runs on three hits. Quiles broke the inning open with a two-run double to right center, and scored on Haggett's single moments later. Sanchez capped the inning on a run scoring single to plate Haggett.
Lake Erie scored their final two runs in the top of the eighth inning on a two-out single from Stevens to score Haggett and Mejia. Windy City scored single runs in the sixth and ninth, but it was too little too late.
Connor Whalen (1-0) scored the victory for Lake Erie. After shaking off a tough first inning, Whalen went 6.2 innings, allowed three runs on six hits and fanned six in a winning effort. Daniel Cropper (1-1) took the loss after allowing six runs on eight hits over 4.1 innings of work.
The Lake Erie bullpen gave up its first run of the season, after tossing 19 consecutive scoreless innings of work to begin the season. Jordan McCoy surrendered a solo homer in the bottom of the ninth inning on Thursday afternoon.
Sanchez led the way for Lake Erie offensively, going 4-for-6 on the afternoon with a trio of singles, a double, a run and drove one in as well. Quiles went 2-for-6 on the day, and drove in six runs, while Haggett reached four times in six trips to the plate, going 2-for-4 in the process with two runs batted in.
The Crushers will continue their road trip on Friday night, when they begin a new three game series against the Southern Illinois Miners at Rent One Park in Marion, Ill. Left-hander Todd Kibby (0-0, 1.69) will start for the Crushers, and the Miners will counter with lefty Rick Teasley (0-0, 0.00) The first pitch is scheduled for 8:05 PM.
