Grizzlies Split Four Division Games
November 30, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Utah Grizzlies News Release
The Utah Grizzlies went 2-2 last week splitting games with San Antonio and Houston. On Tuesday versus San Antonio, the Grizzlies trailed 1-0 heading into the third period but used a game-tying goal by Keith Ballard (his first professional goal) and eventually won in a shootout as Jeff Taffe went three-for three in the shootout getting the eventual game winner. San Antonio came back the next night with a 1-0 win despite a great performance in net by David LeNeveu (33 saves). It was the third time this season the Grizzlies have been shutout. On Friday in Houston, the Grizzlies erupted for four third period goals defeating Houston 5-3. LeNeveu made 39 saves earning the victory. Utah followed that game with a 5-2 loss against Houston in a penalty filled game (212 total minutes). Erik Westrum scored both goals for Utah and Jarrod Skalde and Fredrik Sjostrom each had a pair of assists in the game. Jean-Marc Pelletier started for Utah and made 26 saves.
Grizzlies Acquire Terry Virtue
~Last week, the Grizzlies acquired defenseman Terry Virtue from the Spring field Falcons in exchange for defenseman Nikos Tselios. Virtue is a veteran of over 940 games with two Calder Cup rings to his name (Providence and Hartford). Since joining the Grizzlies, Virtie has not recorded a point but has been a steadying influence on the blueline.
Skalde-Westrum-Sjostrom Line Catches Fire
~The line of Jarrod Skalde, Fredrik Sjostrom and Erik Westrum were hot this past weekend in Houston accounting for three goals and seven assists. Westrum led the way with four points (2-2 â4), while Skalde (1-3 â 4) and Sjostrom (1-2 â3) each added three points. The trio also combined to post a +9 in the two games
Here Come the Wolves:
~The Grizzlies long-time rivals, the Chicago Wolves, make their way west for the first time this season on Tuesday and Wednesday. The rivals have played 69 career games against each other with Utah posting a 27-35-3-4 record. Chicago boasts the #1 minor league prospect, as ranked by the Hockey News, in goaltender Kari Lehtonen who this season is 0-0-0-0 with a GAA and a save %. After the two games with Chicago, the Grizzlies hit the road for the first meetings of the season with the Cleveland Barons on Friday night and the Grand Rapids Griffins on Saturday night.
