BRIDGEPORT, CT â The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, have announced the signing of Right Wing Blake Bellefeuille and Center Brett Nowak to professional tryout contracts.
Bellefeuille, who will turn 27 later this month, joins the Sound Tigers from the United Hockey League's Danbury Trashers where he was a teammate of John Morlang, who signed a PTO with the Sound Tigers last week. He has six goals, four assists, ten points and four penalty minutes in 17 games with Danbury. The 5'10'' 205-pound native of Framingham, Massachusetts split last season between the AHL's Norfolk Admirals and Providence Bruins posting five goals, eight assists, 13 points and 19 penalty minutes in 66 games with the teams. He spent the previous three seasons, 2000-03, under contract to the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets posting one assist in five big-league games. Bellefeuille spent most of his time under contract to Columbus with the AHL's Syracuse Crunch and played four years, 1996-2000, at Boston College. He graduated from Framingham High School as the all-time scoring leader in Massachusetts high-school history with 120 goals, 182 assists and 302 points.
Nowak, 23, joins the Sound Tigers from their ECHL affiliate, the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies, for whom he has seven goals, ten assists, 17 points and 25 penalty minutes in 18 games this season. The 6'3'' 200-pounder from New Haven was the seventh pick, 102nd, overall of the Boston Bruins in the 2000 NHL draft and spent all of last season with their AHL affiliate in Providence posting thee goals, ten assists, 13 points and 37 penalty minutes in 55 games. He played the previous four seasons, 1999-2003, at Harvard University.
The Sound Tigers will host the Norfolk Admirals tomorrow, Wednesday, December 1st, at 11:05 a.m. in the second-annual "Cool Fun 101" educationally-themed morning game. They will also host the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins this Friday at 7:35 p.m. and the Lowell Lock Monsters this Saturday at 7:05 p.m. All three games will be web cast live at www.soundtigers.com. This weekend's games will also be broadcast live on 600 WICC-AM.
