MARION, Ill. - The Gateway Grizzlies scored eight unanswered runs and rallied for an 8-4 comeback win against the Southern Illinois Miners Wednesday night at Rent One Park.

Trailing 4-0 heading into the fifth, Gateway (37-21) scored in each of the final five innings to avoid the sweep and stay a half game ahead of River City in the West Division.

Marquis Riley drove in a run on a single in the first inning. Frank Martinez led off the third inning with a home run while Aaron Gates added an RBI single and Chris Burke brought in a run on sacrifice fly.

In the fifth inning, Gateway scored three runs to move within one. They scored the three runs despite not recording a hit. Ben Waldrip and Richard Seigel started the inning with back-to-back walks. Rookie Cole Bieser followed with a sac bunt and Waldrip scored on a throwing error by Miners starter Matt Bywater. Madison Beaird brought in a run on a groundout and Tommy Richards capped off the scoring with a sacrifice fly.

Waldrip hit a towering home run in the sixth inning to bring in two runs and give the Grizzlies a 5-4 lead.

Gateway added single runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to finish off the comeback win.

Gateway recorded just four hits for the game, but took advantage of four Southern Illinois errors.

Right-hander Chris DeBoo (4-0) recorded the win after pitching two and two thirds scoreless innings of relief.

Gateway begins a five-game homestand Thursday night with game one of a series against the Evansville Otters. Right-hander Aaron Newcomb (8-2) will make the start for the Grizzlies. First pitch is set for 7:05 at GCS Ballpark.
