Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, Ill. (July 22, 2014) - The Southern Illinois Miners took an early 4-0 lead against the Gateway Grizzlies, but could not hold the visitors off the board in the final five frames, allowing just four total hits but committing four errors leading to four unearned runs in an 8-4 loss at Rent One Park.
A double to right by Frank Martinez was followed in the first by Marquis Riley's RBI single to make it 1-0 after one inning. The Miners then tacked on three more in the third when Martinez shot a solo homer to right-center to lead off the frame, and Aaron Gates drove home another run with an RBI single. Chris Burke then hit a sac-fly to make it 4-0 Miners after three. Southern Illinois amassed seven hits in that span against Gateway starter Ja'Vaun West.
But Gateway would come all the way back. A throwing error and two walks in the fifth led to three runs, two of which were unearned against Matt Bywater (6-2). Two more runs scored when Ben Waldrip hit a two-run homer to right on a 3-2 pitch with two outs that gave the Grizzlies a 5-4 lead.
Gateway would score single runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth, two of which were unearned thanks to two more errors, to complete the scoring and hand the Miners just their tenth loss at home this season. Bywater took the loss, his second of the season and first since June 7th.
The Miners got two-hit games from Riley, Martinez, Gates and Ryan Cavan, and out-hit Gateway 10-4, but could not complete the sweep. They will continue their nine-game homestand by hosting the Washington Wild Things for three nights starting on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Michael Carden will pitch for the Miners against Washington's Scott Dunn.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2012 Frontier League Champions and have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception. They also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season. For ticket information, please contact the Rent One Park box office at 618-998-8499.
