Washington Wild Things News Release
Normal, IL-It may be their toughest test of the season but the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, passed with flying colors as they completed a three-game sweep with a 4-3 victory over the Normal Cornbelters Wednesday at The Corn Crib.
Troy Marks earned the series-sweeping win for Washington in his first career start for the Wild Things, while Normal starter Matt Packer suffered the loss.
The contest remained at a 0-0 standstill until the top of the fourth inning when designated hitter CJ Beatty knocked an RBI single that scored shortstop Garrett Rau and gave Washington a 1-0 lead. Beatty and left fielder Scott Kalamar plated later in the inning when Washington third baseman Carter Bell launched a two-run triple into the outfield to put the Wild Things up 3-0 over Normal.
On the rubber, Marks did not disappoint in his Wild Things debut. The 6'5" right-hander worked his way through the CornBelters offense with veteran-like confidence, not allowing a hit until the fourth inning. Marks' shutout bid ended one inning later when Normal third baseman Richard Lucas scored on a groundout by shortstop Pat McKenna. Marks finished his night going six innings, allowing five hits and striking out four.
Washington regained their three-run lead in the top of the sixth inning when catcher Michael Allen punched an RBI single through the gap to score first baseman William Beckwith. Allen was a late addition to the Wild Things lineup, as he replaced starting catcher Jim Vahalik in the bottom of the first after Vahalik left the contest with an injury to his right foot.
Normal inched within two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning thanks to an RBI single from second baseman Ozney Guillen. Guillen tried to score himself later in the inning off of a Washington throwing error, but a solid defensive play by second baseman Sam Montgomery thwarted Guillen's plans and kept the score at 4-2.
The Washington lead was cut to one run in the bottom of the eighth when first baseman Aaron Dudley knocked a double into the outfield, plating right fielder Sam Judah. Washington closer Jonathan Kountis came on to pitch after the Dudley double, preserving the Wild Things lead and giving them the series sweep.
Washington stays on the road, as they take on the Southern Illinois Miners in a three-game series beginning Thursday, July 24. First pitch is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. Fans can listen to all the action with Randy Gore on WJPA 95.3 FM and/or follow live game updates on Twitter @washwildthings.
