Washington Wild Things News Release

Normal, IL-The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, powered six home runs in a scheduled doubleheader to sweep the Normal Cornbelters at the Corn Crib on Tuesday.

Outfielder CJ Beatty led the offensive charge as the Wild Things recorded 14 hits and scored 10 runs en route to a 10-5 rout of the Cornbelters in game one. Beatty, who last Tuesday accompanied six of his teammates at the 2014 Frontier League All-Star Game at GCS Ballpark, slugged two home runs in the victory. Coincidentally, the last time Beatty collected two home runs in the same game was in the Things June 21st game at CONSOL Energy Park against Normal.

As for the opening act, shortstop Ryan Kresky started the slugfest as he answered a 4-1 deficit with a three-run bomb to tie the game at four. In the fifth, CJ Beatty belted his first homer of the night, a solo blast, to give Washington their first lead of the night, 5-4. Catcher Jim Vahalik followed suit with a two-run jack to extend the Wild Things lead 7-4. The following inning, Beatty mimicked Vahalik with a two-run shot, his second dinger of the night, resulting in a 9-4 Washington lead. The Wild Things added another insurance run in the top of the seventh to cap off the 10-5 win.

Washington pitcher Alex Kaminsky improved his season record to 2-4 and allowed just four runs over five innings. Normal ace Cullen Babin (5-4) suffered his fourth loss of the year and allowed seven runs in 4 2/3 innings, walked two and struck out one.

In game two, Washington first baseman William Beckwith's two solo shots were the difference makers in a 4-3 Wild Things victory over the Cornbelters. Wild Things starter Shawn Blackwell, who was used in relief, earned the win with two shutout innings and five strikeouts. Cornbelters pitcher Bobby Shore was charged with his fourth loss of the season as he allowed four runs in six innings of work.

Beckwith broke a scoreless tie in the second with his first home run, a solo shot, since returning to the Washington lineup earlier last week to make the score 1-0. He added another laser in the top of the fourth for a 2-0 Wild Things advantage. Washington added two more runs in the fifth when newcomer Jose Dore scored off an errant throw by the Normal defense and outfielder Scott Kalamar drove in Danny Poma with a sacrifice fly.

The Cornbelters were able to plate three runs off Wild Things reliever Al Yevoli in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 4-3 ballgame but a groundout to second ended the Normal threat.

The Wild Things and Cornbelters battle in the regular season series finale Wednesday at 8:05 p.m. EST at The Corn Crib. Listen to all the action with Randy Gore on WJPA 95.3 FM and/or follow live game updates on Twitter @washwildthings.

Side Note: Game Two of the doubleheader was not over until 12:45 a.m. EST.
