Wild Things Hold off CornBelters

NORMAL, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, surged late but fell 4-3 to the Washington Wild Things on Wednesday night at the Corn Crib.

The Wild Things broke through with a big fourth inning with the first five hitters reaching base including an RBI single by C.J. Beatty and a two-run triple by Carter Bell for a 3-0 advantage.

The CornBelters cut the margin to 3-1 in the fifth inning when Richard Lucas led off with a double and scored on two ground outs with the RBI from Pat McKenna.

Washington added to the lead in the sixth when Will Beckwith singled with two outs, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on a base hit by Michael Allen.

The Belters cut the deficit to 4-2 in the seventh inning with a lead-off single by Lucas, who took second on a passed ball and came home on a single by Ozney Guillen. The margin shrunk to 4-3 in the eighth inning on a two-out rally begun by a Sam Judah single and an RBI double from Aaron Dudley.

Troy Marks (1-0) went 5.1 innings for the win in his Wild Things debut while Matt Packer (1-1) worked six innings with seven hits, giving up all four runs (three earned) with one walk and nine strikeouts. Jonathan Kountis registered the final four outs for his league-leading 22nd save.

The home stand continues on Thursday at 7 p.m. as the Lake Erie Crushers visit the Corn Crib for a three-game series. The Belters send right-hander Kurt Schluter (0-1, 7.20 ERA) to the mound while the Crushers counter with lefty Matt Rein (0-4, 6.37). Miller Thirst Quenching Thursday features $1 drafts and $2 margaritas and live post-game music by Chicago Farmer.
