Portland Beavers News Release
FRESNO, Calif. - Abraham Nunez was 4-or-5 with a home run and three RBIs, and the Fresno Grizzlies took advantage of five Portland errors and overcame two different four-run deficits to defeat the Beavers 11-8 Wednesday night at Grizzlies Stadium.
The Grizzlies (58-81) spotted the Beavers a four-run lead in the first and later fell behind 7-3, but they steadily chipped away, eventually overtaking Portland with a five-run outburst in the bottom of the eighth.
Chad Santos hit his 13th home run and had three RBIs, while Mike Cervenak, who pushed across the go-ahead run in the eighth, had two RBIs.
Paul McAnulty had a home run and three RBIs, and Jack Cust hit his 29th home run of the season for the Beavers.
Jon Knott doubled and drove in his 108th run, which is one shy of tying the Beavers' franchise record for a season during the Pacific Coast League's modern era. Terrmel Sledge singled and scored on Knott's double, stretching his six-year, team-record hitting streak to 19 games.
The loss ended the Beavers' chances of finishing above .500. At 66-72, Portland needs to win each of its remaining six games to finish at the even point. The Beavers conclude their series with Fresno Thursday night before wrapping up the season with a five-game series at Salt Lake beginning Friday.
Billy Sadler (1-0) got the win, despite retiring just two batters. Brian Wilson worked the ninth for his seventh save.
Mike Adams (1-2) gave up six runs over 1 2/3 innings of relief, but only two of those runs were earned. Justin Leone (2), McAnulty, Knott and Adams all committed errors in the game.
The Beavers got an RBI single from McAnulty in the first and went on to score three more in the frame on two bases-loaded walks and a hit batsman.
Fresno narrowed the gap to 4-3 by the third inning, but Cust hit a solo homer in third and McAnulty added a two-run blast in the fourth to put the Beavers ahead, 7-3. Cust's homer, his fourth in his last five games, tied him with Knott for the team and league lead.
Santos hit a two-run home run off starter Tim Stauffer in the fifth.
NOTES: Wednesday, the Beavers and San Diego Padres announced a two-year extension to their Player Development Contract. The new agreement runs through the 2008 season ... the five errors is a new season high for Portland.
