Tucson Sidewinders News Release
Sacramento - Micah Owings pitched six innings of one run baseball and had three hits and an RBI to help the Sidewinders to an 8-1 win over the Sacramento Rivercats on Wednesday night at Raley Field. The win is the 88th of the year, a new Tucson franchise record.
On a night when the Sidewinders could have used the designated hitter, Chip Hale elected to allow Owings to hit for himself. Owings delivered an RBI single in the second and base hits in the fourth and fifth innings. He finished 3-4 with an RBI and a run scored at the plate. On the mound, the right-hander pushed his record to 10-0 with six strong innings. He allowed just a run on four hits with five strikeouts. Over his last three starts, Owings is 3-0 with a 1.89 ERA. He has struck out 22 and walked just two in that span.
After taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, Tucson seized total control with a four run second. Owings base hit to left scored Kenny Perez and Alberto Callaspo followed with a three run home run to right to give the Sidewinders a 5-0 lead.
Ben Fritz was charged with the loss for Sacramento. Fritz (6-5) went 4.2 innings and allowed eight runs on 11 hits.
Jon Weber had a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the fourth to push the Sidewinders lead to 6-0 and Juan Brito's two run homer in the fifth made it 8-0.
Sacramento scored their lone run in the fifth as Scott McClain followed Dan Johnson's double with an RBI base hit to left.
Every member of the Sidewinders starting lineup had at least one hit except for Weber who walked twice and had a sacrifice fly. Chris Carter, Robby Hammock, Matt Erickson and Brito joined Owings with multi-hit games.
Evan MacLane, acquired from the Mets for Shawn Green, pitched two shutout innings in his Sidewinders debut. He allowed three hits and struck out one.
The Sidewinders and Rivercats wrap up their four game series on Thursday night. Right-hander Dustin Nippert (13-7 4.76) starts for Tucson against lefty Randy Keisler (8-5 3.84) for Sacramento. First pitch is at 7:20. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 7:05.
