Conrad homers twice in loss

Round Rock Express News Release

ROUND ROCK - Brooks Conrad belted his career high 22nd and 23rd home runs, but they weren't enough to match two huge innings by Memphis, who downed the Express 10-6 in the third game of the series.

The Redbirds (St. Louis Cardinals) chased starter Zeke Astacio out after five innings of work, belting three home runs and taking advantage of four walks coupled with seven hits to score all 10 of their runs. Infielder Brendan Ryan - playing in just his second career Triple-A game - cleared the bases for Astacio with a grand slam to the right field berm as part of a six run 5th inning.

Conrad got Round Rock going in the first inning with a 392-foot shot to the ‘Birds bullpen, driving in Joe McEwing who had reached first on a walk. In the third he hit his team leading 23rd to nearly the exact same spot, followed up an Eric Munson RBI single to tie the game at four for the moment.

Express relievers Mike Gallo and Aaron Williams combined for four no-hit innings to close out the game, but the damage had already been done off Astacio.

The two teams meet Thursday (7:05 p.m.) for Round Rock's regular season finale at The Dell Diamond. The biggest fireworks show of the year will follow Thursday's game, which features half-price beer and $1 sodas.

The Express head out for Nashville on Friday where the team will close out its regular season with four games before opening up its first PCL playoff series on Sept. 6 against either Nashville or Iowa. Round Rock will return for Game 3 of that series on Friday, Sept. 8. Games 4 and 5 will follow on Saturday, Sept. 9 (1:05 p.m.) and Sunday, Sept. 10 (1:05 p.m.) if needed.
