Griffins' Win Streak Stands at Five
December 5, 2003 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Grand Rapids Griffins News Release
Grand Rapids, Mich. - Marc Lamothe made 33 saves, several of the brilliant variety, to lead the Griffins to a 2-1 victory over the Milwaukee Admirals on Friday in a clash of Western Conference titans at Van Andel Arena.
Lamothe became just the fourth goalie in franchise history to earn six consecutive wins, as Grand Rapids extended its winning and unbeaten streaks to five and seven games (6-0-1-0), respectively.
With the win, the first-place Griffins tied the Hamilton Bulldogs for most points in the AHL with 32, and they leap-frogged the Admirals to assume the highest winning percentage in the conference at 0.667.
The Griffins jumped out to a 1-0 lead late in a wide-open first period. Streaking down the left side, Jiri Hudler took a shot from the faceoff dot that was denied by Brian Finley, but Hudler won the race to the rebound and beat the Milwaukee netminder stick-side from the slot at 16:21.
The teams traded goals in the early part of the second frame. Mike Farrell's one-timer from the left point eluded Lamothe just 1:33 into the period, but Hudler assisted on what proved to be the game-winner less than five minutes later. From the high slot, Hudler slid a pass into the left circle to Kevin Miller, whose laser snuck inside the far post at 6:16.
With his two points on the evening, the 19-year-old Hudler now has points in five straight games (2-6-8) and totals 15 points (4-11-15) in just 14 contests as a Griffin.
Lamothe, who owns a 0.83 GAA and a 0.968 save percentage during his streak, was helped out by a Griffins penalty killing unit that has not allowed a power play goal in a team-record eight straight games and has denied 39 consecutive chances by the opposition.
During the game, Griffins left wing Michel Picard was recognized for playing in the 1,000th regular season game of his professional career.
