LOOKING AHEAD:
It's a reunion weekend in the AHL, beginning when the puck drops in Albany on Friday night (7:00 ET) in what would be the first head-to-head meeting between Bridgeport rookie Martin Kariya and older brother Steve Kariya of the River Rats. The Sound Tigers are looking to extend their impressive 13-game unbeaten streak (12-0-1-0) and 15-game points streak (13-0-1-1), while the Rats are out to reverse a 1-6-1-1 record at the Pepsi Arena this season as they continue a seven-game homestand. Albany has alternated wins and losses in its last eight outings, most recently dropping a 3-2 OT decision to Providence on Wednesday.
Ex-Leaf Brad Boyes and the rest of his Cleveland teammates were shut down on Wednesday night by Mikael Tellqvist; the rematch is Friday as the Barons host St. John's (7:00 ET, 8:30 NT). Boyes, who spent most of his All-Rookie 2002-03 season in Newfoundland, is Cleveland's second-leading scorer with 17 points this year, and he has played more games (20) than any other AHL player this season without recording a penalty. Tellqvist's 27-save shutout came in his first AHL appearance of the year, and ended the Barons' modest three-game winning streak.
Rochester visits Manitoba on Friday and Saturday (7:30 CT, 8:30 ET) in Amerks defenseman Brian Chapman's return to Winnipeg, where he spent six seasons patrolling the Moose blue line. Chapman, who played 447 of his 1,106 career professional games for Manitoba, is one of three former Calder Cup champions among Rochester's defensemen (joining David Cullen and Rick Mrozik), and the Amerks have parlayed that experience into the second-ranked defense in the AHL, allowing 1.81 goals per game.
In other action this weekend, Lowell hits the road for three games against Manchester, Hartford and Providence, all teams ahead of the Lock Monsters in the tight Atlantic Division... Milwaukee takes its 6-1-2-2 road mark into Grand Rapids to battle the West-leading Griffins on Friday... Philadelphia puts an eight-game unbeaten streak on the line with a home-and-home against Norfolk... Hamilton hosts Toronto in another Golden Horseshoe showdown, live Sunday on Rogers Sportsnet.
