Griffins Battle to 3-3 Tie in Norfolk

NORFOLK, VA - The Grand Rapids Griffins (25-11-7-2) and Norfolk Admirals (25-14-4-3) tied 3-3 on Wednesday night at the Norfolk Scope in a match-up of division leaders in the Western Conference. The tie makes the Griffins 12-3-3-2 away from Van Andel Arena this season.

The Admirals got on the board first with two first period goals. The first goal by Garry Valk when he snuck a puck between Griffins goaltender Marc Lamothe's left shoulder and the right corner at 11:58 from Igor Radulov and Brandin Cote. Quintin Laing tapped in the Admirals' second goal at 17:18 from Brett McLean and Dmitri Tolkunov.

The Griffins answered with a power play tally at 18:10 of the first period when center Jason Williams blasted a one timer past Admirals netminder Steve Passmore. Forwards Tomas Kopecky and Derek King picked up assists on the goal.

Center Stacy Roest notched his seventh goal in the last 12 games when he scored on a breakaway to knot the score at two at 10:55 of the second period. Defenseman Dave Van Drunen floated a pass over the Admirals defensemen that Roest gloved down springing him on the breakaway.

The Admirals regained the lead when Marty Wilford banged in the rebound of McLean's shot. Mike Peluso also assisted on the goal at 5:35 of the final frame.

The Griffins tied the score when Williams won a faceoff back to defenseman Philippe Plante who blasted a shot past from the point past Passmore at 13:51 of the third period.

The goaltenders maintained the tie through overtime making several key saves. Lamothe finished with 25 saves, while Passmore turned away 28 shots.

The Griffins continue their road trip with their first ever visit to Philadelphia to take on the Phantoms on Saturday afternoon at 3:05 p.m.
