Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets earned a hard-fought doubleheader sweep over the Savannah Sand Gnats on Thursday night, winning the opener 2-1 in 11 innings while picking up a 6-1 win in the nightcap at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
Ari Ronick delivered one of his finest 2009 performances in the opener, striking out eight over seven innings and allowing one unearned run and four hits with three walks. Ronick allowed the unearned run in the third inning after a dropped fly ball set the Sand Gnats up in prime position to score. Sean Ratliff's dribbler on the infield was enough to score the lone run of the game until the seventh inning.
Johnny Monell walked to open the seventh and was lifted for pinch runner Vladimir Frias, who made it to third on an errant pickoff attempt from Savannah pitcher Rhiner Cruz. With one out, Ehire Adrianza hit a bouncer to first with Vladimir Frias ruled out at the plate, attempting to score from third on a throw from first that appeared to be wide. GreenJackets manager Dave Machemer was ejected arguing the call with his team still trailing.
With two outs in the seventh, Francisco Peguero singled to tie the game at one and after the GreenJackets saw several opportunities fall by the wayside, Peguero was again the hero with his one out RBI single in the 11th to give the Jackets the 2-1 win.
Edwin Quirarte (5-1) picked up the win in game one with a scoreless 11th, striking out one. Phillps Orta (1-2) took the loss, allowing Peguero's winning hit after 1.1 innings of relief.
In the nightcap, the GreenJackets led 1-0 on a run scored via a Josh Mazzola double play ball in the first and broke things open late in their 6-1 triumph.
Peguero continued his hot ways, with a 4-4 effort in game two with an RBI. Mazzola tripled home two as part of Augusta's three-run fifth while Andy D'Alessio added an RBI single in the frame. In the sixth, the Jackets tallied two more on Peguero's RBI base knock and Vladimir Frias' run-scoring triple.
Andrew Reichard was solid in the win, going 6.2 innings and allowing just a run on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Reichard (3-4) had allowed just one hit until the seventh and retired 12 straight at one point. Robert Carson (8-9) took the loss for Savannah, allowing four runs on eight hits in five innings with two walks and two strikeouts.
With the sweep the GreenJackets move to within half a game of first and will look to sweep the three-game series on Friday with Mike Loree (8-7, 4.14) on the mound in the series finale. He'll face fellow righty Chris Schwinden (8-6, 3.38). First pitch comes at 7:05 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on WRDW AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
