Sacramento River Cats News Release
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Top prospect Sonny Gray (5-3) held the Salt Lake Bees to two runs on nine hits and one walk with seven strikeouts, but the River Cats couldn't pull out the win, losing 2-1 on a Fireworks Friday night at Raley Field.
The Bees struck first, scoring a run on a double play from Efren Navarro in the third, plating Kole Calhoun. They scored their second and final run in the seventh when Calhoun singled-home second baseman Andrew Romine, giving Salt Lake a 2-0 advantage.
The River Cats threatened in the bottom of the eighth when, after Andy Parrino and Jemile Weeks each singled to lead off the inning, Grant Green laid down a sacrifice bunt, moving the runners over for Stephen Vogt. Parrino scored when Vogt grounded out to second, moving Weeks to third for Michael Choice. Unfortunately for the Raley Field faithful, Choice struck out swinging to end the threat. The River Cats were unable to push another run across in the bottom of the ninth, falling by a score of 2-1.
Gray took the loss despite his quality start. Relievers Brian Gordon and Mike Ekstrom combined for two scoreless innings, and Weeks paced the Cats offensively, going 2-for-4. Hiro Nakajima finished 1-for-3 with a double, while Parrino went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
The win was awarded to Bees starter Billy Buckner (5-2), who shut Sacramento out on three hits and one walk with five strikeouts over six innings of work. Righty reliever Ryan Brasier notched his fourth save of the season with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.
The River Cats now hit the road for their longest trip of the year, playing 12 games in 13 days beginning at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday night at Cheney Stadium when lefty Andrew Werner (4-7, 5.82 ERA) takes on a Tacoma Rainiers starter who is yet to be determined.
Sacramento returns home for Fireworks Friday on June 14, opening a four-game set against the Tacoma Rainiers that will feature Star Wars Night on June 15, Kurt Suzuki bobblehead giveaway day on June 16, and Throwback Monday presented by Cache Creek on June 17.
