Iowa Cubs News Release
Nashville, TN - Johnny Hellweg had his longest outing of the season and led the Nashville Sounds (17-36) to a 3-1 victory over the Iowa Cubs (24-29) at Greer Stadium tonight. Hellweg limited the Cubs to one run in seven innings and the Sounds won their first series of the season, taking three of four in the set.
The Cubs claimed the early lead when they scored their only run in the top of the third inning. Logan Watkins led off with a single and went to third on a base hit by Brian Bogusevic. Dave Sappelt followed with a fly ball to right field that was just deep enough to allow Watkins to tag and score ahead of the throw from Khris Davis. Hellweg would scatter three other hits, walk two, and struck out five in earning his third straight winning decision.
Cubs' starter Yoanner Negrin was even better than Hellweg during the first five innings of the game. He retired 15 of the first 16 batters he faced to start the game and struck out two. Blake Davis ended the streak by leading off the bottom of the sixth inning with a double. Hellweg followed with a bunt towards first baseman Brad Nelson. Nelson fielded the ball and fired to third base, but Davis beat the throw. Shortstop Donnie Murphy received the throw and fired to first to try to get Hellweg. The throw sailed over the head of Watkins and Davis raced home to tied the game.
Negrin reached on a fielder's choice and ran the bases in the top of the seventh inning and didn't look like the same pitcher in the bottom of the inning as he started falling behind in counts. Stephen Parker led off with a single and scored on a double by Josh Prince that gave the Sounds a 2-1 lead. After a walk to Hunter Morris, the Cubs set up their bunt defense for Anderson De La Rosa. De La Rosa showed bunt, but pulled the bat back, and floated a soft line drive up the middle for an RBI hit that extended the Sounds' lead to 3-1. After that hit, the Cubs turned to Brian Schlitter out of the bullpen. Schlitter got two ground balls for a force out and a double play to end the inning.
The Sounds' bullpen would hold the lead for Hellweg. Lefty Travis Webb gave up a leadoff walk to Bogusevic in the eighth, but struck out Sappelt. The Sounds then turned to right-hander Tim Dillard who struck out pinch-hitter Brent Lillibridge as Bogusevic stole second, and got Murphy to fly out to right field to end the inning. Sounds' closer Rob Wooten finished the ninth to earn his eighth save.
The Cubs return home to start a four-game series against the New Orleans Zephyrs at Principal Park tomorrow night at 7:05. RH Guillermo Moscoso (2-2, 4.80) will start for the Cubs against RH A.J. Battisto (1-1, 6.75) for the Zephyrs. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 and streamed at iowacubs.com with the pre-game show starting at 6:45.
