Iowa Cubs News Release

Nashville, TN - The Iowa Cubs (24-28) struggled on offense and had three members ejected in a 6-1 loss to the Nashville Sounds (16-36) at Greer Stadium tonight. Sean Halton's grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning broke open a close game, helping the Sounds take a 2-1 lead in this series.

Three Sounds combined to handcuff the Cubs on offense. Chris Narveson started and allowed one hit in two innings on a major league rehab assignment. R.J. Seidel took over in the fourth and worked into the eighth before giving up a run. In the top of the sixth inning, third base umpire D.J. Reyburn called a strike on an appeal of a check swing by Brett Jackson. After swinging and missing at the next pitch for strike three, Jackson made a comment on his way to the dugout and was ejected from the game. Cubs' manager Marty Pevey took up the conversation with Reyburn and was also ejected. Seidel (1-2) was unaffected and worked 5.2 innings to earn his first triple-A win. He allowed a two-out RBI single to Brian Bogusevic in the eighth for the Cubs' only run.

Cubs' starter Brooks Raley (4-4) allowed two runs on six hits in six innings to post a quality start, but suffered the loss. Raley walked Josh Prince to start the second inning and Stephen Parker drove him in with a double into the right field corner. Scooter Gennett led off the bottom of the third with his first home run of the year. The Sounds could have had more in the inning as they loaded the bases with one out, but Dave Sappelt threw out Hainley Statia at the plate trying to tag up and score on a flyout by Parker to end the inning.

Marcus Hatley followed Raley to the mound for the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Gennett singled and stole second. After a walk to Statia, Cubs' catcher J.C. Boscan was ejected by home plate umpire Chris Segal even though there was no obvious confrontation between the two. After the delay, Hatley walked Khris Davis to load the bases. With Boscan ejected and Luis Flores in the game, the Cubs were out of catchers so acting manager/hitting coach Brian Harper scrambled to the bullpen to get another reliever warmed up behind Hatley. Two pitches later, Halton launched a grand slam to break the game open. Hatley would get another out and walk another batter before Hisanori Takahashi came in to end the inning. Blake Parker allowed a hit and struck out the side in the bottom of the eighth to finish the game for the Cubs.

The Cubs and Sounds wrap up this four-game series tomorrow night at 7:05 at Greer Stadium. RH Yoanner Negrin (0-1, 2.73) will start for the Cubs against RH Johnny Hellweg (3-4, 3.99) for the Sounds. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 and streamed at iowacubs.com with the pre-game show starting at 6:45.
