Amarillo Gorillas News Release
AMARILLO, TX â For the first time in two seasons the Amarillo Gorillas will begin their 2004-2005 Central Hockey League season at The Jungle in the Amarillo Civic Center.
The Gorillas unveiled their new schedule at a press conference on Tuesday afternoon at their Corporate Offices located at 1934 Civic Circle in front of media and fans.
Opening weekend is set for Friday, October 22 when Amarillo hosts the Odessa Jackalopes at 7 pm at The Jungle and then their I-27 rivals the Lubbock Cotton Kings will be in town on Saturday, October 23. The Gorillas will face the Jackalopes a total of nine times this season, while the Cotton Kings will be another regular opponent with 10 games scheduled. The San Angelo Saints are another common rival as they will face the G-men eight times. In total, the Gorillas will be face Southwest Division opponents 27 times and the other Southern Conference teams 10 times.
"Overall, I think that within our own division the schedule seems very balanced which is very important," said Gorillas Head Coach/Director of Hockey Operations and Assistant General Manager Joe Ferras. "February will be a very demanding month as we play nine road games and we will need to be very healthy to make a playoff run."
The first rematch of the exciting CHL playoff series between the Gorillas and the San Angelo Saints will be in Amarillo on Friday, Nov 6. The first time that the two Southern Conference Championship series opponents, the Gorillas and the Laredo Bucks, will see each other is Saturday, Nov. 13 in South Texas.
The busiest months for the Gorillas will be December and February when the Gorillas will have a total of 13 games each.
Other highlights of the schedule include the only visit by the newest member of the CHL, the Topeka Tarantulas, on Saturday, December 18th. The first trip to the newest arena, the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas will be in mid-February. The Gorillas will make their first trip back to the state of Tennessee to see the two-time CHL Champion Memphis RiverKings at the end of the regular season.
"With the schedule reduced to 60 games, I think this will be beneficial to all clubs including Amarillo, now that we have reduced a few weekday games," said Ferras. "Our fans will have more opportunity to see great hockey and have an enjoyable night out on a Friday or Saturday during the upcoming season."
Fans will be able to celebrate New Year's Eve with the Amarillo Gorillas as the Lubbock Cotton Kings will be in town on Friday, December 31 and then enjoy the first year of 2005 when on Saturday, Jan. 1, the G-men will entertain New Mexico.
There is one minor change that Amarillo Gorillas fans will enjoy this year as Sunday start times have been moved to 6 p.m. All other home games start at the usual 7 p.m.
Individual game tickets are available in October, but fans are encouraged to purchase full and partial season tickets. A $50 deposit is required for each seat purchase, and all seats must be paid in full by October 1.
For further information on the full or partial season ticket plans or corporate packages that are available, please drop by the Gorillas Corporate Offices at 1934 Civic Circle, just off of I-40 and Georgia; or by calling 242-7825.
