Amarillo Gorillas News Release
Austin, TX 1/25/08 - The Amarillo Gorillas came back from a 2-0 deficit to beat the Wichita Thunder 5-3 on Friday night at the Kansas Coliseum. The Gorillas snapped out of a three game road losing streak with their second win over the Thunder this year, powered by Matt Miller's two goals and Marcus Reszka's two assists. Dan McWhinney made 29 saves on the 32 shots he faced, and the Gorillas climbed to within five points of the fifth and final playoff spot in the Southern Conference, thanks to Corpus Christi getting beat by the Laredo Bucks.
The Gorillas went down 2-0 in the first 4:30 of the game, before Chris Martini and Matt Miller brought the score to even with goals at 9:06 and 10:15 of the first period. In the second, both teams would have chances, but neither could gain the lead as the teams skated to the locker room still tied 2-2 after forty minutes. Two Amarillo players would register their first goals with the team in the third period, making the difference in the win. First, Brett McConnachie would score at 8:50 off a great individual effort, and Brock Becker would add his first Gorillas goal at 12:27 to put Amarillo ahead for good.
Travis Clayton's penalty shot goal at 19:45 would bring the Thunder to within one, but Matt Miller's empty net goal would seal the deal for Amarillo, who secured their twelfth win of the season.
Amarillo will head home to take on the New Mexico Scorpions tomorrow night, and the first 1,000 fans through the door will receive the second set of limited edition Gorillas trading cards, courtesy of Amarillo Laser and Vein Clinic.
