Scorpion Fans Draw More Blood

January 25, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
New Mexico Scorpions News Release

[ RIO RANCHO, N.M.]-The numbers are in and New Mexico is clearly the winner in hockey matches and blood donations when competing against McAllen, Texas and the Rio Grande Killer Bees.

In December, United Blood Services Rio Rancho challenged its sister center in McAllen, Texas, to a contest in conjunction with their respective hockey teams, the New Mexico Scorpions and the Rio Grande Killer Bees. The Scorpions held a blood drive prior to the game against the Bees on December 15 in the Santa Ana Star Casino. Not only did the Scorpions win the game 10-3, but they helped United Blood Services collect 84 units of blood. When the Scorpions played against the Bees in Texas on January 12, they once again were victorious with a score of 4-2, and the McAllen center collected 28 units of blood in the drive held prior to the game.

To make things more competitive between the two centers, the executive directors from each of the regions agreed that the loser would have to serve lunch to the employees of the winning center.

"Whew," said Elizabeth Waltman, executive director of United Blood Services New Mexico, when she received the news that New Mexico had won the challenge. "I didn't think we would lose, but I was cautious."

David Veloz, the executive director of United Blood Services Rio Grande stated he was glad that he didn't have to shave his head or wear a bikini, but looked forward to serving the Rio Rancho employees lunch. "They won fair and square and did a great job of getting blood donations during a critical time."

"We had wonderful support from the Rio Rancho community and surrounding area such as Ray's Ace Hardware, Turtle Mountain Brewing Company, the New Mexico Ice Holes, Santa Ana Star Casino, Golden Corral, the City of Rio Rancho, and of course the New Mexico Scorpions," said Charlene Smith, donor recruitment manager at United Blood Services. "They donated items to say 'thank you' to the donors. This event was a huge success for all of us. We're not sure if McAllen will take us up on another challenge, but if they do, my money is on Rio Rancho."

Most healthy people who are at least 17 years old and who weigh 110 pounds or more may give blood. Federal regulations require donors to wait 56 days between donations. Donors should eat healthy meals and drink plenty of fluids before donating. Picture ID is required.

Friday, the Scorpions continue the three-game road trip in Odessa starting at 6:05 p.m. Saturday, New Mexico travels to Amarillo for a 6:05 p.m. puck drop. Both games came be heard live on 610 The Sports Animal or seen for free on CHL Network.

The Scorpions return to home ice on Tuesday, January 29th when the Arizona Sundogs come calling. The game inside the Santa Ana Star Center begins at 7:15 p.m.
