CORPUS CHRISTI, TX- The Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League beat the Corpus Christi Rayz 4-2 Friday night in front of 4,376 fans at the American Bank Center.
With the win Bucks head coach/GM Terry Ruskowski picks up his 450th career coaching win, but more importantly Laredo snapped their season-high four game losing streak. 236 of Ruskowski's wins are with Laredo.
Laredo improves to 27-12-2(56 points).
Jeff Bes scored two goals (one on the power-play), and handed out one assist, while James Hiebert scored once and had two assists to lead the Bucks.
Dustin Traylen in his first start back from the IR set aside 34 of 36 Rayz shots to get his 16th win between the pipes.
Niether team could score in the first period as both goaltenders were equal to the task. The Bucks were outshot 14-9 in the period, with Traylen stopping all 14 Rayz shots and Corpus goaltender Jason Tapp setting aside all nine Bucks attempts.
The Bucks came up empty on two power-plays in the first period.
Laredo took a 2-0 lead into the third period as they connected on two power-play goals.
Bes gave the Bucks a 1-0 lead just 1:38 into the second period as he took a rebound in front of Tapp and sent a rifle shot high over the goaltenders shoulder. It was Bes' 25th goal of the year, with Hiebert and Paul Elliott picking up assists.
The Bucks made it 2-0 with another power-play tally at the 6:40 mark. Chris Korchinski picked up a rebound at the bottom of the left circle and sent it past a diving Tapp. It was Korchinski's 15th goal of the season, with Elliott picking up his second assist of the game, with Steve Simoes adding another assist for the Bucks.
The Bucks penalty killing unit was busy in the second period, killing off all four Rayz power-plays, with Traylen stopping all nine Corpus shots.
Laredo (11-7-2 on the road) outshot Corpus in the second period 10-9.
The Bucks made it 3-0 at the 4:38 mark of the third period when Hiebert notched a power-play goal, Laredo's third power-play tally of the game.
The Rayz (15-19-5) then scored two goals in 1:02 seconds to cut the Bucks lead to 3-2.
First it was Jay Latullippe scoring to make it a 3-1 Bucks lead at 14:54, then at 15:56 Nik Lindberg scored on a break-away past Traylen to make it 3-2.
The Rayz pulled Tapp with 1:09 left for an extra attacker to try to tie the game, but the Bucks hung on.
Bes scored an empty net goal from just outside the blue line with 20 seconds left to make it 4-2 Laredo.
