Amarillo Gorillas News Release
Amarillo, TX 11/20/08 - In his first game against his former team, Bill Vandermeer netted the game winner in the third period to lift the Oklahoma City Blazers to victory over the Amarillo Gorillas, 3-2.
Oklahoma City got on the board first with a Robin Gomez powerplay goal, which was answered just moments later by a Luke Lynes 4-on-4 tally at the 4:52 mark of the first period. Stacey Bauman responded for the Blazers, wristing a shot past Gorillas netminder Mike Gorman to put Oklahoma City up 2-1 heading into the first intermission.
During an evenly played second period, Amarillo was able to tie up the game after a Sam Ftorek shot was tipped past Blazer goaltender Doug Groenestege on the power play, setting the tally at 2-2.
However, just 27 seconds into the third period, Vandermeer took a perfect feed from Brian Passmore and placed it behind Gorman to give the Blazers the go-ahead goal and put them on top, 3-2. The Gorillas (4-9-0) could not take advantage of 1:22 of 5-on-3 power play time late in the third, as they suffered their second consecutive road loss.
Gorman (2-2-0) took the loss in net for the Gorillas, stopping 34 of 37 Oklahoma City shots.
The Gorillas' next game will take place at Laredo Saturday night, with the puck dropping at 7:30 PM central time. Fans can watch the game online via the CHL Network.
