Arizona Sundogs News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - Rivals the Arizona Sundogs and New Mexico Scorpions skated in the third of ten contests slated for this season on Friday night at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. Sundogs newcomer Adam Perry tallied two goals and two assists in the game but his four-point effort fell short as New Mexico escaped with a 7-5 win. With the loss, Arizona falls to 6-8-1 on the year and back into a tie for second place in the Southwest Division with the Scorpions.
New Mexico converted twice in the opening period Friday night to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. Arizona was handed its first power play opportunity of the night just 2:13 into the contest following a Ben Chaisson tripping penalty, but it would be the home club that would find the back of the net to open a one-goal lead. Defenseman Aaron MacInnis beat goaltender Marco Emond for his third goal of the year from Christopher Robertson 24 seconds into the man disadvantage. The MacInnis goal would be Arizona's league-leading sixth shorthanded tally given up this season. New Mexico's Seth Leonard gave his club a 2-0 lead while on a late-period man advantage with a low shot from the middle past Emond with 1.6 seconds to play in the opening frame. Jamie Herrington and Neil Trimm were credited with assists on the period-ending tally. Shots through the first period of play were 17-8 in favor of the Scorpions.
Opposite the first period, Arizona and newly-assigned forward Adam Perry tallied twice in the middle frame to tie the game at 2-2 heading into the final period of play. The Sundogs grabbed their first goal of the game with 9:01 to play in the middle period with a shorthanded marker of their own. While on a partial line change, defenseman Kyle Hood sent a pass from his own zone to Perry who snuck behind the New Mexico defense. Perry patiently dragged the puck around netminder Andrew Martin and into the back of the net for his second goal in as many games since being assigned to Arizona by the American Hockey League's San Antonio Rampage. Perry grabbed his second of the game five-and-a-half minutes later to pull Arizona even at 2-2 as Rob Lehtinen pinched from his defensive position and dropped a backhand pass to Perry in the low circle for his sixth helper of the year. Tyler Liebel also notched an assist on the second period equalizer. The Sundogs out-chanced New Mexico in the second, holding a 12-9 advantage in shots in the period.
Perry gathered his third point and first assist of the game 17 seconds into the third period to give his club its first lead of the game, 3-2. Perry sent a shot on Martin and the rebound bounced onto the stick of Joel Irving who slammed it home for his ninth of the year. Linemate Cory Stillman also worked into the scoring with the secondary assist. The Scorpions pulled even at three goals apiece with 8:33 to play in regulation as Craig Macdonald slipped a puck along the ice between Emond and the post for his team-leading tenth goal of the year from CHL rookie scoring leader Torren Delforte and forward Mitch Stephens. Skating 4-on-4 after a two-minute roughing penalty to Liebel and a five-minute fighting major penalty to MacInnis immediately following the Macdonald tally, New Mexico regained a one-goal lead at the 12:57 mark as Seth Leonard collected a pass from Sam Bowles and beat former Colorado Eagles teammate Emond. The Sundogs answered less than three minutes later while on the ensuing power play to pull even at 4-4 as A.J. MacLean pushed a rebound past Martin for his fourth of the season. Perry registered his second assist and fourth point of the night along with defenseman Sean Zimmerman. The see-saw battle continued as the Scorpions regained the lead with 2:51 to play in regulation as John Mazzei attempted to send a centering pass that was redirected past Emond for his eighth of the season. Delforte gathered his third helper of the night. With time winding down, Emond was called to the bench in favor of an extra attacker but the Scorpions' Herrington recorded the empty netter with 27 seconds to play. Post-goal fighting broke out for the second time Friday night after the Herrington empty-netter resulting in a Sundogs power play as Karl Sellan and Robertson exchanged blows. Breaking into the Scorpions zone, Irving netted his second of the game on a one-timer from defenseman Jon Landry with six seconds to play. With Emond pulled a second time, Macdonald sent a shot off the faceoff into the empty net, securing the 7-5 New Mexico win. Herrington assisted for his third point of the night.
Emond appeared in net for Arizona and stopped 43 of 48 shots in the loss to fall to 5-4-1 on the season while Martin blocked 33 of 38 shots in the win. Arizona finished 1-for-9 with the man advantage while holding the Scorpions to one power play goal on 11 chances. Final shots registered at 50-38 in favor of the home club.
