Clayton Breaks League Record as Mudbugs Top Rage
November 21, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
BROOMFIELD, CO - Four second period goals helped lead the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs to a 5-2 victory over the Rocky Mountain Rage as Travis Clayton broke the CHL record for games played on Saturday night. Clayton now holds the all-time record for games played in Central Hockey League history with 709, breaking the mark previously held by longtime Oklahoma City Blazer Joe Burton.
The Bugs fell behind 1-0 in the contest before the second period barrage that put them on top to stay. Kevin Cooper starred in the game with two goals and one assist to push his team-leading point total to 18 this year. Ken Carroll also moved past Lance Leslie for fourth on the league's all-time wins list with the 155th win of his CHL career.
The Mudbugs surrendered the first goal for the ninth time this season against the Rage when Aaron Davis picked up the rebound of Brent Cullaton shot for a shorthanded goal that made it 1-0 after the first period.
The Bugs then exploded for four goals in the second. Less than two minutes in, J.J. Martin stole a puck and set up Tyrel Lucas in the slot to even the score at one. A few minutes later, Quade Lightbody's long pass led Kevin Cooper in on a breakaway where he beat Scott Reid five-hole to put Bossier-Shreveport on top 2-1. After missing on their first three powerplay chances in the game, the Mudbugs then got the man-advantage going as well. Late in the second, Simon Mangos skated deep into the zone and fired a wrister on net that made it through traffic and just over the goal line to push the lead to 3-1. Moments later, Cooper scored his second of the night on another powerplay to make it a 4-1 Mudbugs lead after two periods.
Rocky Mountain battled back early in the third with a nice breakaway goal from Colt King in the third to make it 4-2. The Bugs got that one back though when Brett Smith tapped in the rebound of a shot by Cooper to give the Bugs the final margin of 5-2 and break a three-game road losing streak.
Carroll made 26 saves in his third win of the year while Reid stopped 24 shots in defeat. The Mudbugs finished the night converting 2 of 6 powerplay chances and the Rage missed on their three opportunities. Bossier-Shreveport outshot Rocky Mountain 29-28 in the contest.
